Wedding ceremony music.. which instruments?

Hi brides and brides-to-be!

We originally planned to have our DJ cover all music for us during the wedding but have since requested the DJ only play the reception in favor of having live music during the ceremony and cocktail hour. We’re not getting married in a church with organs or pianos readily available.
I’ve talked to a ton of different artists, from keyboard players, to guitar players and ensembles. I think for budget reasons we can really only afford either a guitar player or a keyboard player. This brings me to my question.. Did you have live music at your wedding and if so, what was it? Was it beautiful? We’re having a difficult time deciding and I’d love some opinions!

The company we’re working with had a few options for live music during the ceremony, and we went with a solo violinist. Consider that you might want the dj there during the ceremony to provide mics or a sound system, that’s what was recommended to us.

In your situation I’d probably lean more towards a guitarist than a keyboard player, but that’s just my personal preference.

Great question! tbd on what we'll have at our wedding, but I have been to a wedding that had a string duet that played modern/pop songs. It was actually really beautiful. Seeing that led me down a rabbit hole of watching these types of string modern/pop song covers on youtube.
If you know that songs that you want for your ceremony, it might help with the instrument(s) you pick. Search for videos of guitar or keyboard covers of the songs and see what stands out for you.

I love live music for wedding ceremonies!! It's so lovely and intimate! 💖 My favorite is string trios & duos, and I've seen several incredible harpists!!
If your choice is between a guitarist and keyboardist I'd personally lean towards the guitarist! But I think Michaella's suggestion to listen to covers of your ceremony songs on the guitar and keyboard is a great idea!! 🌟

Both guitar and piano play beautifully. It all depends on the types of songs you want

Love live music for ceremonies! We had a violinist. Loved it. Either a guitarist or pianist works too. Look up wedding songs by piano/guitar and listen to which sound you like best.
