Not sure if this is the right Forum for this. But my fiance and I are getting married in September. We are doing cookies for dessert and originally thought of just having a cutting cake for photo purposes. However, no one will be eating the cake since we aren't serving it for dessert and recently we've been thinking of just not doing a cake at all. Does anyone have any opinions or experiences with no cake at all? Do people really care since the dessert is something different? Thanks in advance!

I've been to weddings where there was a small cutting cake for the couple and I don't think it was a very difficult or confusing concept for guests. If the cake is a traditional, multi-tiered wedding cake, all of your guests will assume they are getting cake, but if the cake is smaller guests are pretty logical about figuring out its not going to feed everyone. Whenever we've been at a wedding with a cutting cake, the desserts (whether they are slices of sheet cake or something else entirely) have been rolled out either at the same time as or immediately after the cake cutting, so it's pretty obvious what everyone is getting.

I'm not a huge cake person either but we had one at our elopement and I'm really glad we went for it. Our elopement was pretty informal, so cutting a cake seemed like a simple enough tradition to pull off and make it feel more like an important event. We had our venue/caterer make us a 6" cutting cake and it was so worth it! Cutting the cake together was actually a lot of fun, and because we had our cake made by a really talented chef, it was so delicious and we really enjoyed it. I would say if you like the tradition but don't like cake all that much, splurge on getting a really good cake or pick a different dessert that you do like and can cut into. One wedding we went to had an assortment of pies, and the couple cut into a pie instead of a cake. Don't settle for a mediocre cake unless you have a sweet tooth or it won't feel all that special. My MIL also got us a cake (because she wasn't sure if we were going to have one) and that one was too sweet and heavy for my liking, and it felt a bit like a chore for us to eat it after.

Hello Briana! Congratulations! if you and your fiancé are not planning on having cake and just want it for photos there are many options! you can consider a pastry that you both love and share with your guest and also many beautiful fake cakes that have an insert for one slice of cake for photo options Smiley shame

I attended a friend's wedding a couple of years ago, where instead of having a wedding cake, they had cupcakes. This was for my late-godmother's eldest son, and I fell in love with this idea right away. I want to have cupcakes for our wedding reception, and the great thing about that is that you can mix and match everything, so there will be definitely variety for everyone to enjoy.

No a lot of clean-up involved either.

We're having mini ice cream cakes for our guests (fiancé owns a few DQs, so we thought it would be cute and fun), and originally were not going to do a regular cake at all. My mom kind of got in my head about it being tradition, so now we're just having a small one to cut and save the top for our first anniversary. There will be enough so if some guests want, they can have a piece.

My fiance and I were thinking the same thing! In the end, we got an inexpensive cake for the sake of tradition. Maybe we will pack up some of it and take it with us at the end of the night!
