Not sure if this is the right Forum for this. But my fiance and I are getting married in September. We are doing cookies for dessert and originally thought of just having a cutting cake for photo purposes. However, no one will be eating the cake since we aren't serving it for dessert and recently we've been thinking of just not doing a cake at all. Does anyone have any opinions or experiences with no cake at all? Do people really care since the dessert is something different? Thanks in advance!

I think it's fine not to have one! A cake wasn't super high on my priority list either but my mom was all "you HAVE to have a cake" and she said if it was too expensive for us she'd pay for it because she didn't want us to not have one Smiley tongue So we did end up getting one and I was really happy about it! It was delicious, cutting it was fun, we got a couple super cute photos. Also, I got to use the cake topper that my grandparents and my parents used on their wedding cakes, so that was really special, even my grandpa who is usually the most apathetic and indifferent person in the world got so happy when he saw their cake topper being used at our wedding Smiley smile In addition to that my husband has the biggest sweet tooth ever, and choosing our cake was literally the ONLY part of wedding planning he actually made a significant contribution with (he barely even helped with the tuxes lol, the best man and I handled that mostly) but he got SUPER into the cake tasting and ended up choosing the flavors and the design, and it was really fun to just see him get so into something wedding-related, and was nice to have a part of the wedding that he had done since the rest of it was mostly things I had picked out.

So for us it ended up being really fun and special.. But without the circumstances around it, I think we would've been fine without one. You won't be missing much.

Our catering package includes an option for 3 desserts so we're providing that for our guests instead of a cake. (I should note that our venue charges $3 per person cutting fee, so that's the other reason we're not doing one!) However, the venue and catering will let us bring in a small cake just for pictures. My aunt has the recipe that my great grandmother used to make her wedding cake, so I might ask her to use that recipe for a small cake for us. Baskin Robbins ice cream cakes are special for our relationship going back to our first date, so we've thought about getting one of those too. We're having a sweetheart table where we'll have the small cake for us, so hopefully that clears up the confusion for the guests that it's just for us and not everyone.

I've certainly been to weddings without them before and no one ever thought twice of it to my knowledge. I don't think you even need one for cutting purposes if it's not important to you.

In the same boat as you! We’re still planning on a small/cute cake for ceremonial cutting/photos, then donuts served for everyone. I’m not sure it matters about confusion for our guests if it’s what you want! We like the idea of a tiered display setting, with the top being the cake, then the bottom two displaying the donuts. Could work for your cookies as well!

    Hi & Congratulations!!!

Some couples are doing cup cakes and donuts for their dessert table.

We are actually doing a 6 tier cake and also having a dessert and fruit/ candy and fountain as of now. May down scale if things do not change. We postponed our October wedding to May 2021. I could not focus and enjoy MY JOURNEY of planning. We are in Broward Florida and not allowed to start reopening. But I am E STATIC for those of you that are able to!!!

    Happy Planning!

This seems to be a lot more common recently! Go for it! I don't think the guests will mind at all! I'm only doing a cake because my aunt offered to make it for free. If that was not happening, then I would be doing something similar to what you are doing and just not do a cake. Don't forget, it's your day! Do what YOU want. Smiley smile

We're doing a small 1 tier, 6inch cake for pictures and to store to do the traditional one year anniversary thing. It can also be a form of decor - make it pretty, match your theme, etc. If that's what you're into.

It's not weird or bad, you're still supplying guests with tasty treats so why not? Plus, as a guest presented with the choice between cake and dessert bar, I have historically opted for the dessert bar!
If you'd prefer to not bother, that's totally cool. Cupcakes, cookies, etc. can all translate into that "cake cutting" and one year anniversary tradition if you're into that kind of thing. It's your day - cake cutting or not, people will be happy for you and have a lovely time Smiley smile

I don't think anyone really cares if there's a cake or not. And if they do, they can feel free to pick up a slice of cake on their way home :-)

We've opted for mini-cupcakes in a variety of flavors. We decided against the cake because the majority of our guests are not "dessert" people and thought the cupcakes would make it fun and allow those that want to indulge to indulge. We did however decide to get a small 6" cutting cake, however that's more to be able to incorporate some of my heritage (Hungarian) into the design. And my FH and I (as well as his son) all love cake Smiley smile LOL

    Hi Tammy,

We are doing the same thing. I've been to a lot of weddings where the couple has cake, but there's a lot left over and/or you see the cake plates with half eaten cake sitting around. My friend got married literally a week before the shut down & she & her husband were giving away cupcakes. Even with that I feel it is the "safer" choice.

Hi! What I am planning on doing is having a very small cake (kinda like those baby smash cakes, but more wedding like) and having that be our "cutting" cake then everyone else has a couple different options for dessert. I've been in a couple weddings where we did this and it didn't seem like an issue at all.

I don’t think it’s that important! Our cake cutting photos are cute, but it wouldn’t have been awful not to have them. I was considering having just a dessert platter or something but my mom was all “you HAVE to have a wedding cake” and my family was so passionate about wanting a cake that my grandparents offered to pay for it so I wasn’t going to say no at that point lol.

I would try to do it away from guests if you can. Or just order a top tier and take cutting pictures after the wedding. I have heard of people freezing the top and cutting it on their anniversary so that is an option too

I would either do a small cake or no cake at all.
