Hey all,

So we are trying to decide on what flavor of cake we want to do for our wedding. I was originally thinking of doing vanilla cake with semi naked frosting but I felt like that was kind of boring. So I went on Pinterest to look for some ideas and I came across a beautiful red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. I know that it might not be everyone's slice of cake but I love it and so does my fiance! We got some negative feedback on the cake flavor being red velvet because it's "not formal". I was wondering what other people's opinions are. I didn't even know that there were flavors of cakes that aren't "formal".

this is the cake that I showed our baker

ALSO, we will have 2 dozen vanilla cupcakes & 2 dozen German chocolate cupcakes so that there is a variety for everyone.

Yeh, i dunno, i have been to over 15 weddings.. each one that served cake i hated it!! The icing was always horrible and the cake itself left much to be desired... the best wedding dessert served was italian ice (rita’s water ice) and another wedding had carrot cake, and the last wedding i went to had AMAZING cupcakes made by a friend ... i will not be having “cake” at my wedding at all... i want to ask her to make them for my wedding, too!

I don’t like vanilla or white cake. We are doing Red velvet, chocolate and Irish creme. This is our wedding and it’ll be something that me and my fiancé loves. I am definitely not sticking with “tradition”. Do what you and your fiancé love.

Oh also know that the frosting on outside might be difficult in cream cheese frosting as it is a much thinner consistency and tends to be very best sensitive so it can't sit out very long before it melts.

There's no such thing as formal vs informal cake flavors. They're just saying as snarkily as they know that they don't like the choice you picked out because it doesn't fit the "cookie cutter wedding ideal" they expect from you. Serve whatever you wish.
I love red velvet cake as do many people I know. My adopted mom abhors it and I respect that. So I would serve a non-chocolate flavor for her and others in a similar boat.

Ummmm red velvet is one of the BEST cake flavors ever, “formal” or not! Plus it’s so pretty. We haven’t done a tasting yet but red velvet is one of the few flavors my FH and I can agree on. I’m all about chocolate and my FH is a big vanilla lover so this is a good compromise for both of us. You pick what you want!

Didn't know there are formal flavors. Lol You have cupcakes too, I wouldn't worry about what people say. Our cake is a boston cream cake, with a variety of cupcakes as well.

Red velvet is totally normal for a wedding and it's a wonderful flavor.

Never heard of a formal wedding cake flavor! Pick what you and your fiancé like. Red velvet is popular & delicious. We are likely going to do chocolate cake with cookies n cream filling & vanilla cake with some sort of fruit filling with the cake being frosted in whipped cream.

We had confetti cake for our wedding cake (had other flavors for the sheet cakes) so ours definitely wasn’t formal either haha. Red velvet is my favorite and delicious! I say go for it!

Hahaha we were one of the couples that did that 😬 It was actually a surprise for my husband since he declined a groom’s cake and confetti is his favorite “flavor.” He loved it! It was something I had already planned, but a couple weeks before the wedding he remarked that he wished we could have done confetti cake, so I knew I had made a good choice. It was definitely goofy choice, but we didn’t have a black tie wedding (it was semi-formal) so it wasn’t wildly out of place. I think we only had confetti on the top tier, and the other vanilla cake (sheet cake) was regular, but I could be wrong.

I wanted to do a strawberry swirl cake with strawberry preserves and cheesecake mousse but while we both love it as well as 2 of our closest friends my fiancé is against it because it’s an unpopular choice.....back to the drawing board for me 😭

I think red velvet is fine, and I'm a fan of it. I don't know about you, but my fiancee and I decided to have three wedding cake flavors for each wedding cake tier: vanilla, chocolate, and mint, Because we're just extra like that.

I've been to a wedding with a red velvet cake! It was a total hit — everyone loved it!

I just recently went to a wedding with assorted cupcake flavors. The red velvet was by far the star of the assortment. A friend of mine got married earlier this year and had different flavors for each layer: butter pecan, vanilla latte, and caramel something-another. That could be an option too?

However, the day is about you two — it's what Y O U want!

Formal or not we wanted fun and different. Our baker is making coconut cake with fresh strawberries and creamcheese filling (one layer) and carrot cake with tradition cream cheese icing (second layer). Who needs traditional cake flavors make it about you, then your guests will remember.Smiley smile

Red velvet is my favorite and I am sure will be a cake flavor contender for ours. I have never heard of "formal" or "informal" cake flavors and I think it's awesome you'll have cupcakes for other guests if it isn't their flavor of choice. It's your wedding - choose what makes you and your FH happy. Smiley smile Cake is absolutely beautiful, btw!

I LOVE red velvet!! We are having it in the grooms cake as we were originally having a summer wedding and thought red velvet would be too heavy for summer. Our cake will be three tiered with these flavors.

Vanilla Cream Cake Brushed with Raspberry Puree
Center layer of Whipped Cheesecake with
    White Chocolate Flakes

    Fresh Raspberry Buttercream

VERY excited to eat cake! lol

My wedding cake flavor is also red velvet and I have red velvet cupcakes, vanilla, and chocolate for our other guests! I think it is a great idea to have such a variety of flavors.
