Looking for a wedding cake for appx 50-60 people, maybe a 2-tier cake. Calling around some bakeries, I was quoted anywhere from $2.50/slice to $3.95 per slice. Looking for a wedding cake for appx 50-60 people, maybe a 2-tier cake. Calling around some bakeries, I was quoted anywhere from $2.50/slice to $3.95 per slice. I also stopped by 2 supermarkets last night - and looking in their catalogs, the cake designs look quite nice and we were quoted a much less $$$ (as low as $1 per serving!) I definitely understand that in the supermarket bakery, much less choices - only white cake or chocolate cake, and possible to add a filling. The question is, have any of you gone with the supermarket bakery cake for your wedding cake? How was it? Is it worth the 2x price to go with a specialty bakery cake???

I will say that if you do go with a homebaker, check with your baker to see if they are licensed to prepare food for the public. Some venues will not allow food to be brought in that hasn't been prepared in a licensed (and insured) kitchen for liability reasons. Might be good to check with your vendor too so that there are no surprises. Not only that, but having someone who has gone through the process of licensing prepare your consumables is just good common sense. At least they will know the proper handling procedures and all that. I know that I have been asked for proof of licensing and isurance on more than a few occasions.

I use to work in a supermarket, our bakery did an awesome job. They did not get many wedding cakes but when they did and if the right person did it. It was as if it came out of a "real" bakery. The cakes are good, and the icing isn't nearly as sweet as Walmarts (around here anyway). I also know for the most part they bake the cakes and cupcakes and all that good stuff..

It's Gaint Food Stores.. Also Giant Eagle and Martins..But each Giant store I was ever at are very different... And they're mostly PA/OH area..

I'd say go for it. If the pricing is too high in local bakery's then go for the supermaket ones. Make sure you ask questions and try to read the people cuz not everyone in the bakery area will be a great decorator. There will be at least one that is awesome at it..

I haven't made a final decision yet, but Publix quoted me $250 for a three tier white cake with strawberry filling that feeds about 100 just yesterday. And remember, you can always schedule tastings. Mine is scheduled for Monday. I'll let you know how it turns out. lol.

We're going with a local pastry chef! We're getting a two-tier cake made special for my gluten-free/dairy-free diet (allergies) and one or two regular sheet cakes. If we do both sheet cakes, plus the 2-tier cake the total with tax will be $272. Maybe you could check around and find someone like that near you. She doesn't normally do wedding cakes either, but has the experience. Super excited!

I currently work at a supermarket bakery... going into the job... i had NO bakery experience... Some of the girls i work with have worked in a bakery before... but they no longer deal with cakes... the other two girls i work with got the bakery experiece working IN the supermaket bakery.... I guess what I am trying to say... is... even though you may end up spending a bit more going to a bakery that specializes in cakes/wedding cakes... you will have the piece of mind knowing your cake is being made by someone who knows what they are doing... plus... with a cake shop... the price of the cake comes with delivery... something that supermarket bakeries dont offer.... my sister spent about 400 bucks on her wedding cake... 3 tier... with filling, delivery, and the grooms cake came with it...
