Wearing new monogram early?

ENG, on July 17, 2016 at 6:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Okay call me girly! But I LOVE monogrammed everything. And sadly, one of my first thoughts after getting engaged was that I basically couldn't get anything new monogrammed until after my name change.. Which is 2 years away! Or else everything would be my old one soon enough. Has anyone else started wearing their new monogram early? I wanted a new sweatshirt.. Wasn't sure which to order!

I ordered a tote for work with my new monogram on it! And I have a ring dish with it, too.

I mean you can still use your current monogram for another two years. If you were getting married this year I would say yeah don't buy anything new but you have so much time you still can.

How long do you keep/wear a sweatshirt. Personally I keep that kind of stuff forever so I would go for the new one. But if you buy a new sweatshirt ever few years I would stick with the old one.

Yeah I wear things until they fall apart lol. I've started getting stuff for the household with "G" or "Goodwin", because I figure one of us has the name for now.. But something just for me? That's why I wasn't sure..

I say go for it especially if you wear things until they fall apart. I'm the same way!

I understood it to be bad form to use it before you're officially married, but maybe that's just me. I'll have been married a month tomorrow and I'm still waiting on my certified copy of my marriage certificate so I can officially change my name. But the thank you notes (which have our names on them) couldn't wait any longer...

My new last name starts with the same letter, so I never even thought of this! I would buy long term stuff with your new monogram.

Same! All my friends said that too! Because everyone knows my obsession over monograms, and I have been dreaming of my new monogram for years! I jokingly said to one of my BM to just have everyone get me monogrammed things for my shower, well she's on it! She's planning me a monogram and mimosas shower! Woohoo! So about your actual question lol, no! Go for it, I just wouldn't go too crazy cause you want to still have that new feeling when your married and wearing your brand new last name! So I think some things are just fine! Show us the sweater, I'd love to see! I got a new ring dish not too long ago, and love it!

Technically, formal etiquette says you should not use your new monogram for anything until it is officially yours! But, you can really do what you want Smiley smile It just depends on how much the tradition and proper etiquette matter to you personally.

I've already been given one gift with what will be my new monogram on it. It was part of my bridesmaid gift for a wedding I was in this month, and was a really sweet thought on her part. However, I think I only feel comfortable using it around the house until after we're married Smiley smile I don't know, I think it just makes me even more excited to finally be married because I'll finally be able to use that new name/monogram!

@Mrs.T-to-be, I went and picked mine up last week from the county records, maybe call and check the status? I'm going to SSA tomorrow to start the name change-I called and made an appointment last week.

I had luggage tags made with my new name so we could use them for the honeymoon. That was the only thing I did with my new name up until now.....when i got a power bank for my cell phone with the new name...

Pp is right, it's bad form to use his name until after the marriage. Just like you shouldn't put John and Jane Doe as the return address on invites and TSVPs, you shouldn't be using the name prior to the wedding, though you don't need to wait for paperwork to start using it informally after the wedding.

The reasoning is that for one, you aren't married yet, so you're essentially using a fictitious name, and for another, if something happens between now and the wedding, you now have a lot of creating and explaining to do, as well as a lot of painful reminders.

Ultimately it's up to you, but I always find myself gagging a little when women do this. I hate having my maiden name, but until it's no longer mine, it's what I'll continue to use.
