We LOVE this church!!! (Fredericksburg,TX) tell me your thoughts!

Shelby, on March 26, 2016 at 1:51 AM Posted in Planning 0 46

This church is in Fredericksburg, TX. We ran across it on me & FHs trip to the hill country. It's called Saint Mary's... Weddings away off but it's drop dead gorgeous on the inside and out. Super old, cute little town for those of you that don't live in Texas. Pictures of the inside are all over Pinterest if y'all(you all) are interested in what it looks like! If anyone's had a wedding here I'd love to know how much you paid to get an idea!

Are you Catholic? They're not going to let you get married there unless you are. Some churches won't let you get married if you're not a member of the parish even if you are Catholic. I bet this is one of those since it's so beautiful.

Edit again: stupid link won't work, anyways on their website it says you have to be a member of the parish for at least a year.

The documents on the right side of http://church.stmarysfbg.com/sacraments/marriage.cfm state the conditions you have to meet before getting married at St Mary's.

I don't honestly understand people getting married in churches if they are not part of the community, nor joining one to get a nice backdrop.

If you're looking for a church home, it makes sense, but the PP's are right; most Catholic churches will not marry non members, and becoming a member of a Catholic church requires some real soul searching and involvment.

It is very beautiful. Before I scrolled down, I was about to say the exact same thing as PP. They have a lot of conditions.

People tend to get married in churches for 2 reasons: they're religious (duh) and the at specific church has been their home for many years.

If neither of these apply to you, please don't decide to get married in a church. PP are right, this church will not marry you unless you are an active member and you will have to prove that along with counseling.

My FH is a member of the Catholic Church and I am a Christian who is planning to go through Catholic classes. We both are very religious so that's why we were leaning toward this church. I just think it's so beautiful

^ I was about to say the same thing. If it's Catholic you have to be a member have all your sacraments baptism through confirmation, which first communion and confirmation are 4 years to complete all together. Plus you have to take a martial course usually 6 months worth.

^^ but you won't be a member for at least a year of that specific location so they're not going to marry you.

I thought only one of us had to have all those sacraments done? Not both right? And I think there has to be a way you can get permission to marry there without being a member...

It's beautiful! I have been to Fredericksburg. Plenty of things to do and see for your quests. We stayed is a absolutely adorable bed & breakfast there for my birthday. They have so many to chose from. Since it is still early, you should inquire now what their rules are. We are getting married in a Catholic Church in my town. We have been parishioners for years. We had to take marriage counseling classes, and go on a marriage preparation retreat acceptable through the Archdiocese. The town is so beautiful, and people are so friendly, I need to go visit again!!!! Smiley laugh

I was going to say the same as cathy.. why don't you look into trying to become a member, or make an appointment to speak with someone about their requirements and what you can do.

My FH is a member of a Catholic Church in our city just not that in this city and I'm a Christian who will become Catholic. There's no way we can get his priest to ask permission? We plan on going through all the steps and classes. I can't become a member for a year because I'm in college and there is no university in Fredericksburg. So I'm finishing school and then getting married.

If it is Catholic the Archdiocese will require both to have all sacraments. You both must be baptized in the Catholic Chuch, must have received your Eucrist, and must be Confirmed.

Oldest cathedral in Texas located in DT San Antonio. They may be more accomodating to 'guest' catholics being married at the church since many San Antonians don't travel downtown for mass. It is a beautiful church. DH is catholic and I looked into us being married there (they will accept couples if one is baptized catholic - I was raised protestant). We ended up getting married at the Little Church of La Villita. If you end up in the SA area, let me know. I have names of great vendors!

Actually San Antonio is great for us too! We both know our way around perfectly! I'll have to look into that idea too! We live in corpus so 2 1/2 hours isn't bad! Thanks!

You can ask the priest. They may ask you to attend classes for adults to receive all sacraments. These classes are held all over. Many adults convert. I have two friends right now ages 25-30 who are receiving sacraments now during Easter Vigil. Classes have been held since October and will end in May. It all depends on the church. In these classes you will learn about the Catholic faith and what the sacraments mean. Smiley smile

San Antonio was a great choice for us and the prices are not as steep as Austin or some of the other areas. Downtown also has alot of reception venue options that are close by the church. Happy planning!

It usually just takes 1 year to receive all your sacraments, not 4. And only one person needs to be Catholic. Individual parishes might have membership requirements in order to avoid people just trying to book the pretty churches instead of their own church. The best thing to do will be to call and ask and they can walk you through the requirements.
