We found our officiant!

Merfy Lou, on October 22, 2011 at 3:19 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

FH and I had been going back and forth on who to use as an officiant. We didn't want anyone religious and didn't really want to hire someone "randomly." If you recall, I had thought of the idea of having our Best Man and Maid of Honor marry us, but FH wasn't keen on the idea, so I kept brainstorming.

Well, we finally liked one of our friends that I came up with. Called and spoke with him this evening and he said he'd be honored to be our officiant! We're super excited Smiley laugh Now, just to figure out what to get as a thank you gift...

    Congrats!

Just do all your research to be sure it will be a legal ceremony and marriage. I would hate for you to find out later you are not legally married when you need to pull out your papers if something important happens.

Yep, it's super easy in Alaska Smiley smile I know several people who have done it

    Marriage Commissioner Information

"Under Alaska Statute ****(a)(2) 1, anyone can perform your marriage ceremony, including a friend or relative, if they first obtain a marriage commissioner appointment from an Alaskan court as authorized by AS ****.2 The person should be 18 years of age or older, and does not need to be a resident of Alaska or the United States in order to perform the ceremony.

How to Obtain a Marriage Commissioner Appointment

Contact (by phone, by mail or fax, or in person) the court nearest to where the wedding will be performed. The online court system directory has a complete listing of court locations and contact information. You may also contact the office which handles requests for marriage commissioner appointments in the judicial district of the court nearest to where the wedding will be performed"

Thats awesome Merfy. We had the same problem, but NY state won't recognize the marriage if a friend does it. I was bummed. But we met someone really nice, and we're mailing out the contract on Monday morning!! YAY!!!

NYC is very lenient with recognizing online ordinations, but they do have to register with the clerk's office.

Just be careful! You can have someone from the Universal Life Church perform your ceremony, but you cannot get a marriage license in Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester, Nassau or Suffolk county if you're getting married by a ULC minister. Those counties have laws against someone being ordained for the purpose of marrying someone. But if you get your license in a different county, you'll be fine.

We had about an hour three days before our wedding where we weren't sure if we were going to be legally married. Our venue was in Dutchess county and our officiant was a ULC minister (though she's a justice of the peace in CT). Ultimately, because we got our license in Brooklyn though, things were fine.

Thanks Shana. I actually tried to find out for sure with Celia and we kept getting the runaround. The wedding is in Ulster County, actually, so I guess it would've been fine.
