We forgot about the license

KM, on December 6, 2014 at 10:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 27

Just came on to tell you all about our most recent fail. We're moving to NE in 3 weeks. We're having a wedding in Florida, and we live in Alabama (for those who don't know already)....and we totally forgot to get our marriage license last time we were in FL together. We didn't plan on being in FL together again, on a weekday, before the wedding....until now. I can't believe we forgot....I guess time just really caught up with us and with all of the other craziness, it just slipped our minds.

Fail.

Which county? I'm in brevard and you can apply online for the marriage license. I haven't done mine yet but I did see that the application can be done online. Not sure if it's the initial or the whole shebang but worth a shot to look into.

We're getting married in Madison county (just outside of Tallahassee). Do you know if we can apply for the license anywhere in FL and use it in any county? Or do you have to get the license from the county in which you are getting married?

I'm not sure. I did just go on the website and apparently you fill it all out online then still have to go in Smiley sad

I did a quick search and it says that you can get married in any county in Florida and it doesn't have to be in the county that issued it.

Also I would suggest looking into whether or not you can get your license where you live and then use it in Florida.

We figured it out. We just have to go in the week of our wedding (we plan to go the Thursday before, when we are both back in FL) and get it. There's no waiting period for non-residents, so lets just hope all goes well that day!

Awesome! Glad you figured it out. We have to wait three days unless we take a pre-marital course. I have no time for that - so a three day wait it is.

You will have to get the license in Florida, but it doesn't matter WHERE in Florida. Just drive across the border and stop at any courthouse. It was that way in NJ when I got married 20 years ago, and it was that way in Virginia when I just got married a month ago. I can't imagine that it's different any place else. You both have to go in person, and you have to show legitimate ID (driver's license/passport/birth certificate). It's much easier to pick it up afterward. I think you can even get the official copy by mail after the wedding.

The problem with that is that the license expires after 60 days. If we went and got it before we moved, it would expire before our wedding date. It's either take a flight down together before the wedding (which would cost us another grand in flights/hotels) or wait until we're down there for the wedding week and get it then since the "waiting period" no longer applies to us, as non-residents. We can literally get it the day before and be good.

He suggested that. It's an option, but one I'm not a huge fan of. Like a lot of women on here, I want our friends and family to be able to experience our ACTUAL wedding day with us.

Im late to the convo. But you can get the license in any county , it doesn't have to be the one you are getting married in. But I think it does have to be filed in the county you get it in. Our officiant in Clearwater mailed ours to Jacksonville after he signed it because that's where we got it from. We did our premarital course online so we saved a few bucks and itwaived the 3 day waiting period.

@Celia - OMG - really? why not get married in NE, when they have put down deposits and written invitations for a wedding, not a "celebration of marriage reception"?? Ugh.

@KM, I totally get why you want the wedding you have been planning for the past year, in the place you have been planning it. An elopement in a city where you don't know anyone isn't exactly how most of us picture our wedding day.

Happy to read that you will be able to swing in the week of the wedding and get the license. Congrats on the job, too!

Decaf JM14, seriously. I meant the legal license, since that seems to be the sticking point and the basis of this thread. This happens with many of my couples coming to NJ, with our three day waiting period. Many of them just can't get here twice or spend a week here prior to their wedding. 'Swinging back" to NJ isn't a plan if you live in California or Texas.

We don't really have to have that well worn discussion about getting legally married on another day; I married a couple a few weeks ago, in a very small park with three guests; they are having what you would call their 'real' wedding next spring, but her father will probably be dead by Christmas. They will be going through with their wedding celebration exactly as planned, with no mention of the license or legal signing because for them, (as for KM, possibly) that wedding is their marriage ceremony celebration.

    Would you tell them differently?

People do things in many different ways for many different reasons, not the least of which is the regulations that make it difficult to swoop in two days before the wedding and get a license.

Just for the record, it's not that way in NJ; if you live out of state, you have to get the license in the town where you're having the ceremony, and there is a three day wait. If you live here, you get it where you live and can use it anywhere in the state.

I'm going to call the county we're getting married in tomorrow to 100% make sure the waiting period doesn't apply to us as non-residents. I think they waive the waiting period for people out of state because of how many people go down to FL to elope. If for some reason it doesn't work out, we will just get married officially in NE after we get back.

We are getting married in Fl too, we are going to be there only like 2 days in advance so heres hoping we can get one. They do wave the waiting period for non-residents. I am going to try and get mine online though.

KM; I"d make sure your officiant will perform a ceremony without a license in place or proof that you're married already, if you go that route.

We are getting married in FL too. As long as you are not a resident there is no waiting period so we are getting it earlier in the week when we get there. My officiant confirmed that it isn't a problem.

I am going to follow this thread closely. I am a NY resident getting married in South Florida. I would love to be able to apply online in one county even though we are getting married in Palm. Can anyone confirm this is possible?

FYI, I just checked on the Brevard County site, and you can indeed file online, but you still have to go in person to a Brevard County site to pick up the license. At least, that is how I understood it.

I don't see anywhere on the Florida marriage site that the 3 day period is waived for non-residents, but I might not be looking in the right place. However, it looks like if you take a Florida pre-marital course (which I think can be done online) the 3 day waiting period is indeed waived.

Everywhere I saw said non-residents don't have to. I think with Brevard they mail it to you, that is what my officiant said.He does a lot of out of state couple's weddings. I think in Florida you can go to any county to get the marriage license if you are a non resident. My officiant said to go through Brevard County so we could get it in the mail, but we are getting married in Orlando. Also from NY Smiley smile
