We are already married, so do we really need an officiant?

Arizona Bride, on October 12, 2011 at 5:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

We got married legally last year. I'm thinking we can just have a close friend or family member lead the ceremony this time, can't we?

If you're already married, then I'm pretty sure you can have whomever you want lead the ceremony. Heck, I've had several friends get married by a family member or friend who was ordained via the internet.

I would think that any normal legalities necessary to "officially" wed wouldn't apply to you since you already are legally married. I'm no expert, but that's my interpretation.

If you were legally married and have a marriage certificate from your state already, then no, you don't need an officiant of any sort. The officiant is strictly the make it legal. It varies from state to state who can legally marry couples, but you shouldn't have to worry about that at all. If you want to do a ceremony, you probably just want to do something closer to a vow renewal ceremony than a wedding ceremony.

Of course, this all goes out the window if you want to do a religious ceremony now.

No really; just have a friend or family member perform the ceremony.

    Congrats!

I'm often asked to "officiate" at vow renewals -- not because my legal authority is required, but because I have experience putting together a nice ceremony and speaking to a crowd.

So, any friend or relative who is a good public speaker can be your "officiant."
