Wax Seals

Laura, on December 6, 2008 at 9:27 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 14

I am thinking about sealing my invitations with wax. Michaels has all the stuff, you dab some melted wax on the envelope fold and then press this metal mold onto it that forms a beautiful monogram. It looks so cool and official. My fiance is only concerned about how well the wax holds up during shipping. He is afraid that it will look beautiful when we do it and then by the time it goes through all the post offices and mailboxes the wax will chip off some and be a crumbly mess. Has anyone done this technique before? how did it work out? I know there are the new stickers that mimic the wax seal design but I love the real deal. Please let me know! Thanks

I have seen the wax seals used on the inner envelope of the invitation instead of the outer envelope. This protects the wax seal during the mailing process. It is a truly beautiful addition to the invitation. If you are super worried about the outcome and the supplies are not that expensive, test one out by mailing it to yourself on the outside envelope and then try a wax sealed inner envelope.

    Best wishes to you!

I just did the invitation for my friends baby shower with the wax seal from Michaels. It does look beautiful, but I have to say its a little more work than it seems. Depending the amount of invites you are sealing the wax goes by rather quickly, its hard to control at first then you sort of find your nitche. It's better if you have two people doing the work, one with the lit wax the other with the stamper. I spoke to a few of the guest I sent the invite to and they arrived intacked, the wax adheres very well. Hope this helps...

If you have an outer envelope the seals are ok for the ride! They do look really cool. The stickers aren't as dramatic as the real wax. It's a bit of work but the whole wedding is! It's worth the work. It'll look really great when it's all done

LOL... I did wax seals on my invitations & usually every year on my christmas cards as well! The mailman that comes to my office told me not to worry about it if anything the envelopes will be hand stamped at the post office rather than put through the machine! I have used the real old fashion drippy wax but this year for my xmas cards I used a glittery gold stick that you put in a glue gun & then stamp w/ your monogram it looked as good as the old fashion wax & was ALOT cheaper. So I say DO NOT WORRY, I have been doing this for years. Oh but practice before you do the invitaions the old fashion drippy wax can drip so easily you need to get the hang of it before you do the invitaions so you don't ruin them OR get a piece of wax paper & cut a hole to protect the invitaion while you're doing the wax sealing. This is SO funny don't you think?!

I send letters with the wax seals all the time and they have always arrived in tact. the wax that you buy for this (from michaels etc.) has a resin added to it so that it is harder and more durable than say plain candle wax. you shouldnt have any problems using it on the outer envelope, just make sure you wet seal the envelope so that it doesnt fall open (the wax seal wont be a secure closure method alone).

    good luck.

I have used this method several times and the wax is very durable. I order from www.letterseals.com, I am not sure how they compare with Michael's. I buy the wax that you use with a hot glue gun and (I have also ordered custom stamps for Brides to match their font.) it's easy to control your amount and not too messy.

    good luck!

My sister used the monogramed wax from michaels and it turned out beatifully!!! We live in NC and even the invitation to my aunt in Oregon was still intact and as beautiful. To give your FI piece of mind, still seal the envelope like normal, or if you have one traveling a far distance, use double sided tape. I do agree, it is harder work and requires time, patience and practice. Me and my sister did them together, so have help, and do cover the rest of the invite with something, wax paper is the best... Best of luck.

Yes the wax( and its actually a hard sealing wax) or any decorative seals is used on the inner envelope, US postage will not allow on outer envelopes.

They also have premade seals available with hearts and or monograms at many stationery and office supply stores. they are self stick and look wonderful without the mess.

I used the wax on my outer (mailing) envelope for my invitations & have used it on my Christmas cards for probably a good 20 years & NEVER had a problem with the US Postal service. My wedding invitations were hand stamped though but I think it was because the envelopes were slightly lumpy from the bow that was on the actual invitaion. My Christmas cards have never had to be hand stamped. I really don't think you'll have a problem with the wax on the outside Laura.

I really want to do a wax seal and cannot seem to find a place!! Please, any recommendations? I've tried several places, and either they never return emails/phone calls OR they say they have to many jobs and cannot fill my order.

    Thanks!

I’m also doing the wax seal on my wedding invitations and I actually started them last night. I bought the wax from Michael’s and the only kind they have is the old school way where you actually light the candle and melt in on the envelope. I found that it didn’t work that great and it takes forever. However, I found this website that sells the wax for glue guns and it works great. I love the way it looks and it’s easy.

    Here is the website. https://www.oldschoolseals.com/index.asp

Good luck!!! Let me know how it goes.

I did this for my wedding and it was so cute. Here's how we did it -

I had a family friend carve a seal for us out of stone. It wasn't perfect, but it was great because it showed character and was more special that I knew it was custom. http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-make-wax-seals The invitation was printed on an old-looking "vintage" piece of paper, rather than a regular card. It was folded in thirds and sealed on the seam. Then I put them in the thickest stock envelope I could find. I used regular sealing wax from a craft store and didn't have any problems with cracking
