Wash masks before use?

Michelle, on August 24, 2020 at 12:52 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 19
I bought a ton of reusable masks online for my wedding in October. Am I supposed to be washing all of these before handing them out to guests???

Is it party favors or to wear at the wedding?

Are they sealed in plastic? They should be already sanitized for first use.

I would if you are expecting folks to wear them the day of. The ones I have ordered seem to have a slight smell to them when you first get them.

They’re all in a sealed plastic, just not individually. I was going to use gloves to separarte them into individual bags to hand out to guests to wear day of.

I just took one from a bag and you’re right, it does have a slight smell lol. I’ll wash them all by itself isn’t the washer and make it smell fresh haha

I washed and quickly pressed mine. The disposable ones leave in the box until you need them.

I don't think you have to unless, as Kelsey mentioned, they smell weird now. I'm allergic to a lot of detergents, and it's really not fun to break out in hives at a wedding, so I'd definitely prefer they weren't washed ahead of time. COVID particles only seem to survive on surfaces for about 3 days, so we put ours into closed boxes 3-4 days before the wedding so we wouldn't have to worry about that particular issue.

I don't know what the smell is either. I just have noticed it with like every mask I have bought. Plus I'm sorry to say this but we don't know for sure if the person who made them washed their hands, wore gloves or washed the fabric before making the mask.

If you have space, you can also just hang them up for a few days and let them air out to get rid of the smell!

It’s a very slight plastic smell cu they’re in a plastic bag lol.

Maybe I can just throw them in the dryer at a very high temp. I think it should help get rid of that slight plastic smell.

I'd probably wash them with a scent free detergent & no dryer sheets!

I think most retailers will instruct you to wash before wearing, so even though it’s a PITA I’d wash them all. And if you’re placing them on a table or at place settings for guests, maybe include a little sign or tag that says in a cute way these are new and washed for your convenience ... just so no one wonders if they’re getting a used mask. 😂
