Was your proposal a surprise?

Well, mine was a lets say 'not surprised surprise', since we've been together so long, it wasn't uncommon for us to joke about getting married "next February 30th" whenever his siblings or our cousins started asking, but we DID talked about it and where we wanted to be at with our lives by then, like he knew I wanted to get my degree first and after he opened the bakery he wanted it to be a more established thing. So when one of his sisters came to me and started showing me centerpieces ideas or dress ideas for her to wear I thought she was pestering him... again... about getting married, so I just brushed it off. After our anniversary dinner we were just talking about whatever when I remembered something his sister said and told him: "hey... you may want to set FSIL straight, she still thinks you were serious"... and he started stumbling through his words and told me he was actually serious but never knew FSIL was going to say something to me, and that we're almost where we said we wanted to be (I'm getting that degree this december) so he was truly thinking about it. It was a surprise in the sense that I wasn't expecting it that day, but I knew we were getting married SOMEday

Kinda but not really... me and FH talked heavy about it for a while but we decided we would wait closer to 4 years together... we were together for almost 2 when I found the bank statement for the ring he forgot to burn and hide.... now it was just a waiting game of when. He proposed a couple months later when we were vacationing in Hawaii and while I expected it to happen then I was still caught off guard.

My FH proposed on the 14th anniversary of our first date. We had already decided to get married and had set the date for our 15th anniversary, but it was a complete and total surprise that he "proposed" on one knee and with a beautiful ring and all! (Btw, we are both pushing 60 and this is the 2nd time around for us.

I agree. My FH told me about 9 months ago he wanted to marry me which surprised me then. However, wondering when the proposal is gonna happen is driving me crazy. I wish it was a surprise but on the other hand it was nice knowing early on that he was truly serious about me which allowed me to let my guard down. It's also comforting knowing to because we were still able to pick a wedding date that will allow us to have a short engagement. We've abstained from sex and don't live together due to our faith so doing the typical year long engagement on top of dating for a year would be toture lol. But at the end of the day having him in my life is more important than showing of my engagement on Facebook or something.

Nope! I even heard him ask his boss for the day off because he said 'I'm proposing to my girlfriend tonight' lol he can't keep a secret for his life.

My FH and I had talked about marriage but I never knew when it would happen or if it would. He proposed on our 3 year anniversary and I had no idea it was coming he even got his family in on it so I didn't expect anything.
