Warning about the winner in Sharon PA

Britteny, on June 25, 2015 at 9:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

This is my first time posting my own post so please bear with me. This past weekend my mom my fmil and I all went to The Winner in , PA to get my veil. We had previously visited the store about 3 months prior I fell in love with a veil there (along with the price as it was considerably cheaper). We asked the women about their return policy, they said they didn't have one. We then asked if we could come back at a later time with my dress to make sure the color of the veil matched my dress they said sure. It should be noted that my dress was purchased elsewhere. Skip a head to this past weekend I brought my dress up in a pink dress bag. Before I received a hello or anything else I was greeted with a "do you have an appointment?". Explained we were only there to look at veils. The women told me I couldn't even carry my dress around in it's non-see through bag and I had to put it behind the counter. Continued in the comments....

They went on to explain that they changed their policy on bringing outside dresses in (its not on their website or facebook page). At this point my fmil lost it as they were not being nice about any of this. We talked to the manager who said the policy was changed because they didn't want any other brides to see an outside dress and want it instead of one of theirs. My fmil really wanted to see me in the dress. I was willing to settle for trying a veil up to part of my dress in some light just to make sure the colors matched. The manager to avoid ANY other brides seeing my dress (there were only two other brides in the store and several sales people on the floor) put me on the other side of the store in the children's section. I forgot to mention my sister (also my maid of honor) was there and she was shocked that they wouldn't let me carry my dress in the store a sales associate heard her disbelief rolled her eyes and said "I can't imagine anyone telling you that". I just wanted to warn other brides of this new policy and how rudely the sales people treated us. The veil was a bargain and I travel from out of state to get it but it was a lot of hassle.

My big problem was all I wanted to do was match a color and I was told before hand that I could bring my dress back along with how nasty they were before I said anything. I really didn't want to take it out of the bag all the way just enough to see the color as they have no return policy. My fmil went crazy and wanted to see it on....

I get both sides of it. I totally understand where you are coming from, as far as wanting to compare the colours of the dress to the veil. And it sucks that their policies changed without letting you know. That said, I don't think its unreasonable for them to decline you putting on your dress in their store. I respect that there wasn't many customers in the store, but you would be taking away a fitting room, and an associate away from any potential buying customers. And while it sucks that your mother in law to be didn't get to see you in your dress, perhaps model it for her at her house? Or maybe you should have taken her along to buy it? And it's disappointing that you were unable to compare lace colour, maybe a picture or something would have been better?

I have worked in retail for my entire life (12 years in sales and 8 years of that as a store manager, I only JUST got out of it), and I can respect where you are coming from, especially being told incorrect information, but I understand where the store is coming from with respect to their customers and their product. Maybe next time inquire if they have a dress in the same colour that you would be able to compare the veil to.

Oh I get why they policy was put in place and I respect the fact they want to retain sales. Completely get it. They wouldn't even let me have it in the bag. They wanted me to put it behind the counter. I have pictures, extremely poor lighting as I bought it at a sample sale at a bridal show. fmil couldn't attend the show I went to. I didn't want the fitting room or any of that just to lift the bag up enough to see the color and match. My fmil is a force to be reckoned with I kinda disappeared when she asked to see the manager...I'm not one for confrontation. Turns out my dress might be labeled wrong the tag says ivory but the veil I purchased said diamond white? I know nothing about dresses...

Well I wanted to buy it lol but the fmil beat me to it and paid for it. Yes I bought it, all of my wedding has been paid for by the fiance and I and while we can afford a nice wedding I can't afford anything to expensive and this veil ended up matching my dress perfectly. Both my dress and veil were bargains.

Different companies will have different names and colors. It also has to do with the material and dye lot.

I completely understand why you were angry. You went in there as a buying customer. Just because you were looking to buy a veil and not a dress, doesn't make you a non-buying customer. Plus anyone who has ever had training in customer service knows that a customer with a bad experience will spread the word, which could prevent more buying customers.

Wow, sorry you had such a bad experience! I tried on some dresses there. The sales associate was kinda "meh" - wasn't rude but wasn't very helpful, either, mostly just kept an eye on us while my mother, sister and I all picked out and tried on dresses.
