Waiting to book flights?

Kerin, on June 9, 2020 at 4:57 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 25

I'm sure I'm not the only person in this particular situation, so I'm wondering if anyone else has re-booked flights for their honeymoon. Our resort didn't cancel, so we've already booked the honeymoon itself, but the airline cancelled our flights from the 1st date and issued a refund.

The wedding isn't until 2/14/21, and we're supposed to fly to Miami 2/15. Anyone have a suggestion on how long to wait before booking the flights?

Thanks, everyone Smiley heart

I would rebook 6-8 weeks out.

Personally, I would honestly look into it now and at least see if there's any deals or cheaper than normal tickets. Best to get it out the way.

I would do as pp said too and wait. on the bright side it's not like an international flight where the earlier the better.

That's what I was thinking, too, but with all this talk of a resurgence of the virus situation, I'm hesitant! Thank you for weighing in on it, Jasmine!

That's true, too. I checked Delta and a generic google flight search. It's looking like I can get round trip flights for under $1k altogether. Have to talk to FH when he gets home Friday to see what he thinks, too.

    Thanks, Melle!

You can also always do the google flight trackers so that it can notify of prices

HFall. Every airline is stripping flights . If there is business, some will return with different routes. And a couple of airlines will go under. You don't know which. How many times will you rebook. And some routes that have cut service and get it back with the same or a new airline, will have different configuration planes and numbers, and may drop already booked passengers. And other when increasing the number of routes, will keep already booked passengers at the fee they agreed to. Sitting next to someone who paid hundreds less. They waited, and got the steep, steep attention getting fare cuts to get people back to flying. Two recessions I have been through which greatly affected travel, those advance booked more than a few months either went through a nightmare of booking over and over as routes shifted. Or waited, then took advantage of bring back the passenger fares. They ALWAYS add flights to Miami as Hurricane season ends, and snowbirds fly south for winter warm state or Caribbean vacations. New routes and seats will open up before Thanksgiving to and from Miami, because it is a major connection. Wait.

I'd look now on a few different sites and set up alerts (sometimes the sites will show different prices because of their contracts). Then if you notice a dip, you can rebook! Even if there is a resurgence of the virus near your date, I'd assume they would refund again since you aren't cancelling out of choice.

I’d look into it closer because some airlines are saying if you book now, you won’t be refunded if it’s cancelled due to COVID.

On another note, if you’re consistently looking at prices for flights I recommend clearing your cookies in your browsers. Most sites use these to see if you’re looking and if you are, you’re likely to see a price increase because they “know” you’re takin that trip.

I suggest to book about 2-4 weeks in advance to be sure. I don’t know if there is a second wave, but there is a possibility. We had to wait for 4 months, numerous calls, and long waiting on the phone when Hawaiian airline cancel our April flight due to covid and wanted to give us vouchers instead of a refund. They finally refunded us yesterday.

We have another booking in July for our DW and we are still hoping for Hawaii to give our venue a green light to operate. If we can’t get married, there is no reason for us to be there this July. They still have the 14 days quarantine for in coming travelers, and most places are still closed, so I don’t see spending so much just to stay inside a room and eat delivered food. I rather stay home instead of throwing a bag of money out the window, because you know Hawaii, everything cost more.
As pp mentioned, now most airlines have no refund policy due to covid, this makes it harder. Maybe talk to a travel agent about travel insurance? I, however, prefer to stay in the country, due to health care and insurance. In case, knocking on the wood, one of us get the covid, we know we will be in good hands. There goes my two cents.

We're only going to Miami, so not worried about out of country, but think I'll hold off a bit 😉

My FH and I are going to Vegas next month and we haven’t booked flights. Will probably book at end of month since flights are super cheap.
