Vows- Writing your own versus repeat after me... or both?

JStopsCrespo, on March 17, 2016 at 12:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hey guys,

So I'm still a little ways off, but we're planning on meeting with our officiant in the next few weeks to start outlining our ceremony and whatnot.

FH and I are definitely wanting to write our own vows (we're both creative performer types) but I'm also finding myself wanting just a little bit of the formality of the 'do you lawfully take this man to be your husband' 'for better or for worse' bit just so that it can feel... well... more official I guess.

Has anybody on here done a hybrid of the two? Or perhaps just done the personal vows- did they feel official enough?

I know I might be overthinking this but I keep waffling back and forth and it'd be helpful to get input from anyone that has already been through this.

Our officiant is a personal friend (our first improv coach) so he doesn't have much wedding experience and I don't want to put him on the spot by not knowing what we want.

We are planning on doing both. Regular vows "I take you, FH, ..." and then our priest is allowing us to do a breif (2-3 sentences) of our own promises to each other. It allows us to have our own personal flair but still a sense of tradition.

We're personally going to just write vows and them exchange them privately as we both hate public speaking. At my sister's wedding though they did both, they started with their own vows to each other, and then the officiant read off the "do you take this man ect" parts. I think it worked really well!

Vows and Statement of Intent are different. Vows are promises, statement of intent is the I do portion. You can do both.

We are doing both as well. A couple of lines at the very beginning that are personalized, finished with the priest repeat-after-me part.

You could do both, but do keep it brief. You can absolutely write your own vows and make them feel 'official" enough if you make promises to each other.

We felt the same way...we really wanted so recite somewhat traditional vows but we also had things we wanted to personally promise to each other. Neither one if us was too keen on reading our personal vows in front of an audience either...I couldn't have made it through that for sure. So, we worked with our officiant who is a pastor/friend and helped to customize the ceremony and vows...they were perfect. Prior to that though, DH and I decided to write our personal vows to each other. We wrote them in vow books and exchanged them before the ceremony with a gift and read them privately...and they are now a keepsake too in the little books.

We are doing both, too. Our own "vows" will be more like something we wrote that we wanted to say to the other person. And the vows that we repeat will be traditional.

We did the traditional vows, but wrote our "words of commitment" (???) or whatever you call what you say when you exchange rings.

We are writing our own, then having the pastor ask the "Do you take this woman...I do" part but not repeating, just having him read and then saying I do!!

We are doing both. I need to go back and edit it because right now it's too long.
