Virginia Alcohol Help!

Kate, on June 7, 2021 at 1:32 PM Posted in Virginia Planning 0 3
Hi all! I’m from MD but getting married in Leesburg, VA in October. I just realized that alcohol has to be bought in VA for ABC license compliance and I’m having a really hard time finding a place that can deliver everything for the bar; beer, wine, liquor, mixers and ice. Is that even a thing in VA?? Right now, it looks like I’ll have to buy beer from Total Wine and More and then liquor from ABC. . Any suggestions on how to make the process easier is appreciated!

Hi Kate! Have you called that Total Wine you're looking at to see if they also sell liquor? They should definitely also be able to cover mixers & ice!

You can also place an online order with Virginia ABC to get the liquor delivered to your wedding!

Unfortunately, Virginia ABC laws require that only VA ABC stores can sell liquor (they sell a limited selection of mixers as well but they are usually expensive). Beer and wine are sold in the grocery store, convenience stores, and also specialty beer and wine stores.

In my area, each of the ABC stores in town is located directly next door to a major grocery chain (Kroger, Food Lion, Wegmans, etc.). If you decide not to have the liquor delivered then it would be easy to have someone get the ice and mixers (and possibly the beer and wine) from a grocery store and pick up the liquor at the ABC store at the same time. All ABC and chain grocery stores do curb-side pick up and most places will load everything into your car for you. You could ask or pay a friend or family member to make the trip.

Here is further info about which VA ABC stores deliver and their rules. https://www.abc.virginia.gov/products/online-ordering/delivery
    Good luck! Hope this helps.
