Videographer-worth the money?

Rebekah, on June 21, 2019 at 3:01 PM Posted in Planning 1 17

I'm getting married March 27, 2020. I am in love with the idea of having a videographer to document the day so my fiance and I can look back on the day forever and re-watch it. But, the expense of having one is so hard to justify!

So my question is, for those of you who did have a videographer, was it worth the money? Did it capture the day/emotion well enough?

Also, if anyone is around Southern California and you have any recommendations for a videographer, please send them my way!!

We almost didn’t hire one. Like we decided not to, and then 6 weeks before the wedding I was so upset about it that we then hired one lol. Luckily he was still available on our date. We spent $930 for 3 hours of coverage but our videographer ended up staying close to 4.5 hours and refused to accept any extra payment (he was truly a wonderful person). It was worth every penny in my mind. Our video brings back all the emotion of our wedding day. To me, being able to basically relive the day was absolutely priceless. Now that we have it, I seriously cannot believe that we almost didn’t!

I'm So Cal too. I'm hiring a videographer just for the ceremony and a montage of before and after. For $900, I'm getting the fully edited video, with the music of my choice for the prelude and after moments. I'll have two angles (a second shooter) so we'll be able to see both of our faces during our vows.

For the reception, I know friends and family with be taking videos with their cellphones. We'll get lots of fun moments for free.

930 isn't too bad! I've been quoted pricing ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. I REALLY want a video. I thought about having one of my guests do it and just buy a nice camera, but nobody has any editing skills and I want it to be perfect (of course).

Oh wow! $900 isn't terrible! Do you mind me asking who you hired for your videographer?

I was on the fence but hired someone for $1500 for our October wedding. It includes 10 hours, two videographers, drone footage, highlight video as well as edited footage of the ceremony and reception. It was the best price I could find around me for the style we wanted. Can't wait to see how it turns out. I knew it was one thing I didn't want to regret not getting ♥️

Sure. She's a very experienced professional videographer. Her resume is impressive. She's out of Santa Barbara:

I had one. I felt like I wanted it more than photos. But you know I also have friends thatre good with cameras so if you don't want to spend the money you could always have friends capture those specific moments for you

We didn’t get one and I don’t have any regrets, for us it wasn’t worth the money. We live in California as well.

Wow that is actually a fabulous price for everything you got!! I'm not sure where you got married, but my wedding is in Southern California and I am struggling to find anything below $2,000 that has everything I want. But I love the emotion that the video captures. Even when I watch other people's videos, I can just feel their love and emotion for each other, you know?

I would look into the colleges. Maybe find a student that is in film school. We got one for $500 and he sent us his work and it was good.

We are in New Hampshire..I totally get what you mean! I am excited for our photos but the video captures something more. The emotions, people's voices, reactions etc. Have you checked out thumbtack.com? I highly recommend that site Smiley smile

Yeah the $930 was a deal because he was the videographer who works with our photographers so they were just able to add his services to our photo package. Also if you're in California the rates there are going to be more expensive for everything haha, my husband is from SoCal and it seems like everything is always pricier there! What does the $1.5k package include? I would say it's probably worth that amount depending on what is included.

Yeah, it's crazy. We actually live in Las Vegas but we are just having our wedding in SoCal. The price differences just because it's a different city is insane. The $1,500 package just included 4 hours of video and then we actually had to pay more just to get it edited into a 6-7 minute video. And to be honest, it wasn't the best quality of video. Ahhh idk!

I found something called weddingmix. They send you a couple of 4k video cameras and everyone in attendance can take one and record the big moments of the day. After the wedding, you send in the cameras and they create a video for you using the clips that were on there. That route is a lot cheaper, it just won't be professional clips by any means.

I have looked on thumbtack! I didn't have much luck on there, either. I'm going to keep doing my research and hopefully find someone who can do a nice job within my budget!

Daughter only decided to add videography about 6 weeks before the wedding. She looked for someone on Thumbtack, and found a company called Attis Photography (they are based in Burbank, but covered her wedding in south Orange County). They charged $100 per hour for two videographers and all the digital footage. She booked them for 7 hours (first look through cake cutting), and then also purchased a 6-8 minute highlight video (I believe for another $800). So, for $1500, she has digital video of everything they shot, and should receive the highlight video within the next couple of weeks. She was really happy with them the day of the wedding, and we've all watched the raw footage several times. It's long and raw, but it's been fun to get to see & hear so much of what was going on that we either missed or forgot about. Their pricing is all ala carte, so you can pick and choose what you want. (The $100 per hour fee is set, but you can book for however many hours you want.) Good luck!

As a videographer myself, I am biased but to my husband and I, the videographer was just as important as the photographer for us.

Video captures the movement of the day. It captures things that you're going to miss. Afterwards, I found myself reaching out to friends and family to see what videos they took.... hence further convincing me that hiring one was important, because all I want is more.

Photos are just as important but why wouldn't you want twice as many ways to remember your perfect day? Why wouldn't you want photos and a professional video? It's all that you'll have left after when your memories begin to fade.
