Venues on a budget

ArizonaDreaming, on September 10, 2018 at 4:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

I am getting very frustrated. We are on a rather small budget of $3,500 for the entire wedding. We keep getting responses from venues, saying that their pricing is almost all or above our budget! Average I am getting for just renting the space is over $2,500. To some, the pricing they are offering may not seem like a whole lot. But I cannot fathom spending that amount of money for a half day event (just my feelings, not judging others for their budgets!). We only have 40 people, including us. We are cutting cost every where that is possible (no flowers, FH is not renting a suit, my dress will be on sale, etc.).

We are struggling with making it happen.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this! Since your budget is lower, maybe look into a friend or family members house or backyard? Or a public park, or state park? Possibly a church or local gym?

The Japanese Friendship Garden has ceremony only packages that might fit in your budget. you could get a private room at a restaurant downtown for afterwards. (Assuming you are Phoenix Metro by your username.)

Park shelter or lodge. Check out local moose, VFW or Elks lodge too (we rented out an Italian club hall for $500)

I agree with the other suggestions of a public park, friend or family members residence, or your own backyard. Also, look into places like the VFW or even a church basement- many will allow you to use their space for the reception at no cost if you get married there.

Parks and non-traditional venues, look for places that are smaller venues that don't typically host weddings (wedding specific anything up the price) AirBnB is also an option just make sure your clear with the host and get their permission as well as checking neighborhood or ordinances

Park? Zoo? Aquarium? Botanical garden? University/college? These are not normal places to get married at so most of the time they have cheaper prices

We are doing a restaurant for a brunch (when they are normally closed). There is no venue fee- just food and beverage. They have a separate area for ceremony and are charging only $400 to set it up and set up a dance floor.

Can you just book a room at a restaurant?

Our rehearsal dinner was around 35 people. The restaurant had amazing food and it was only $35 per person (not counting alcohol - we had to bring that separately) so altogether we paid about $1500 for the dinner and drinks.

Call some restaurants and see what packages they offer - you might be able to have a private room for less than you thought.

I hear ya! I have a smaller budget and we checked out venues that seemed promising... But after talking to them and seeing what really is included and not, a lot of the places went way over in budget. And that's just for the space... Not including anything else. Then there are the places with the minimums and adding extra $$ per person because you don't meet their minimums.. I agree with PP with saying checking out parks.. I came across one that has a beautiful patio with a gazebo on the patio tucked away on a trail. We asked about pricing and it's only $400!. That's a lot more reasonable than 7k for a venue! We were also having trouble with reception spots...same deal with $$. We finally came across a restaurant we liked that has an upstairs space and we inquired about it .. they told us all we have to do it reserve the spot and no payment. And they are willing to do buffet style and change their menu if we wanted... Pretty much just pay for food! We have a small guest list of 50- but realistically, it will be 40 or so. And that's the max for the restaurant so it will work out! So, most definitely checking out restaurants with private spaces is a money saver and you'll never know what you'll come across or what they are willing to offer!

We are holding our wedding ceremony and reception at a Wildlife center... While our cost is on the higher sode of your budget, ot includes 2 nights of accommodations for about 25 total people and breakfasts. While we were looking, we also looked at state parks.. Options range from nature centers to pavilions, to open park space. Also, often you can rent space at a small botanical garden for a very minimal cost. If we werent trying to accomodate that we live halfway across the country from our wedding party and families, we would have done that. Good luck!

Check local vfw, am vets, fire hall, community centers. A lot of those places are a lot cheaper generally they already have tables and chairs and you can typically bring in your own food. You’re going to have a hard time finding a typical venue in your budget

My budget is $3,000. I think we may even end up going a little below that because several people we know are doing things for free. We are having a church wedding and the reception will be in my future in laws back yard. I know some mentioned to me to have it in a park. Check and see if you can rent a cheap space in the park and honestly you may get some flowers in the background that way. Also, check with a local church if you would do a church wedding. I also considered having a potluck for the food but the man I know that caters volunteered to do it all for free. I'm going to do a popcorn bar instead of favors (saves time and money) and some yard games to keep everyone entertained while we are getting our pictures. I'm planning on a lot of DIY decor also but have to get everything figured out still in that area. Honestly, I've been looking on pinterest and reading a ton of articles on DIY and planning a wedding on a budget. I hope some of this helps.

I'd also check to see if anyone you know lives in a condo/ planned community/mobile home park that has a community clubhouse. We planned my parents 50th wedding an anniversary, and paid for it, 80 guests, a custom sculpture cake, dinner, decorations, all under $2000. Flowers were from a friends garden, we recruited more friends to cook, people lent us China and stemware, we used an ipod and a speaker for music (we made a playlist and just kept that on a loop), we got the clubhouse for free because a guest lived in the community and reserved it for us.

It can happen. You need to think outside the box, and ASK ASK ASK!!!! Dont be afraid to haggle a bit, post something on FB saying what your looking for. You NEVER know who will step up.

What about a township hall? In my area some of them are very nice and often rented out for weddings/receptions or other big parties and the price is very reasonable if you live in their township.

Why not look into restaurants with private space? I know a few in my area that rent for that amount.

Can you look into state parks or American legions? They are usually cheaper options. Of course, with the cheaper venues, you will be doing more of the work.

But don’t get frustrated! You will find one you love. My best advice is go onto your local fb group and see what others have done or what they suggest.

You’re really not going to find a cheaper venue unless it is a church in your town or a public park type area. But even then my friends church wanted $4k. Some churches are cheap or free to use though.
