Venue No-smoking Policy

Dylan, on April 25, 2019 at 9:07 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17
Hi everyone! We just signed the contract with our venue and we are STOKED!

The venue has a no-smoking policy and a big fine that comes with it if it does occur on the property. What is a non-tacky way to let guests know about this ahead of time? (I wouldn’t mention the fine to them, of course. Just need a way to be like “hey please don’t smoke!”)

If you’re concerned about it I would have it on your website and ask the venue is they have a no smoking sign you can put out.

You can put it on your website that the venue has a strict no smoking policy on the property. Otherwise, I'd just have a sign near the doors that say "no smoking on the property."

Yes I would do both in case people don’t read the website.

Our venue would prefer that people not smoke, but she won't fine if someone absolutely has to, and the bride and groom are okay with it. She just asks that they use a cup and dispose of it. She's not afraid to tell people no, but she mentioned that to kind of give the hint that there's no smoking, she obviously doesn't have anywhere to dispose of cigarettes, and said that has worked fairly well for her. If people don't see a designated area, they often ask. Which then she can tell them yes or no depending on the bride and groom request.

But if you're really concerned about people not paying attention to your site or just want to make sure you have it covered, maybe you could have a sign outside that is something kind of like this?

I agree with PP, I would have it on your website and also have a sign out front about it.

Do you know if any of your guests smoke? I honestly can't imagine in 2019 why people still do lol but personally I would reach out to individuals who I know smoke to inform them and also put on the website.

I was thinking the same thing lol - I’m always surprise when I see someone smoking. Although, I think it’s a more regional thing.

That's fairly normal around me, honestly! I can't remember the last public place I visited around Chicago where you were allowed to smoke on or within 15 feet of the entrance to a property! I know around here there is no problem with signage - "No smoking within 15 feet of the entrance," "This is a non-smoking facility," etc. Does your venue have signage? If not, I would just make it a point to directly reach out to anyone who you think might be an offender and just say "hey, heads up that it's a non-smoking venue - they're super strict on this, so I just wanted to let you know ahead of time."

There is no indoor smoking in so many public buildings, theatres, workplaces, schools, and single room restaurants or bars without separate ventilated smoking areas now. I think that your guests will see the signs in the venue. There is no need to warn people , any more than you have to tell them whether or not to wear a coat in winter, or not walk into a classroom and start drinking whiskey from a flask. Assume people will act like responsible adults, unless you know your friends and family are fools. If a few will flagrantly defy the obvious no smoking signs, do you really think your warning them will stop them from lighting up to see if anyone comes to throw them out?Save your energy, and hope your guests behave like adults.

Our prospective venue has the same rule what we were planning on doing is putting it on our wedding website but also including a little card in our invetation that says something to the affect of : " Our venue has a very strict no smoking policy so we ask that if you do choose to smoke to do it at home or not on the property." Just so it is very known. Otherewise maybe make a cute sign for outside areas.

That’s what I was thinking too! Some kind of subtle addition to the invitation maybe. Thanks for that idea!

It’s not allowed anywhere on the property - including outside, which is where I figure most people would do it. It’s always the hope that adults will act like adults! Hahah

As PPs said, I think pretty much everyone knows not to smoke inside. But, if they aren't allowed to smoke outside, either, then you definitely need to let people know that. A lot will assume that it's ok outside. Don't spring it on them when they get there that they can't. I think a notification on a website would be sufficient.

Hi Dylan Smiley smile Congrats on booking your venue! Where is it? Did you decide where you will put this information for your guests to see?
