Venue deposits

Omaira, on January 3, 2019 at 9:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 46
Hey guys !! First time in an open forum and I wanted your insight on some things ..

My fiancee and i have found our perfect venue but are on the fence of how things are being organized . From my understanding , they’re asking us to Zelle them a $1500 NON REFUNDABLE deposit in order to secure our date and set the initial deposits for the vendors they use as it’s an all inclusive package . Have any of you done such thing ? I work for a bank so I feel that I should know better .. just wanting to hear your opinions . 💜

Our venue required the same amount of us. I think that’s typical to reserve the date! Just make sure that you are sure on the day and read the contract carefully.

    Hey Omaira! Welcome to WW!

The fact that they’re asking for a non-refundable deposit seems reasonable to me. If I remember correctly, we needed to pay $500 to secure our date and $1000 1 month later. All of our vendors required some sort of non-refundable deposit.

What makes me question this is the fact that they’re asking it to be paid by Zelle. I know some friends/family who use Zelle but not professionally. Your venue doesn’t give you the option to pay by credit card, check, or cash? Just Zelle?

Hey love ! That’s exactly why I found it so strange because they allow you to pay with debit/credit card for a 3% fee BUT it’s through using PayPal or square , which are yet other transfer services , you know ? Now I know from my experience at the bank, those transfer services are not federally governed by anything . Meaning , if you send a transfer and it turns out to be a scam , there’s literally no protection from the bank to recover those funds . They stated check in the blank contract but it was never mentioned through email.

I don’t mind the amount honestly because the place is beautiful ! What bothered me was HOW they requested the payment .. I’ll make sure to read the contract carefully though! Thank you darling ! 💜

I would definitely reach out to the venue and see if they’ll let you pay with a check! It never hurts to ask. My rule of thumb is that if it makes you uncomfortable, don’t do it (especially when it comes to large sums of money).

Right ! That’s exactly what I suggested to them . I told them I would like to do a sit down to sign the contract and provide a check and have yet to hear a response . Every interaction with them has been through this site ... so I’m not sure the validity of it ☹️

Our venue required a 20% deposit. But I’d only use a credit card 💳 debit card 💳 or a check.

I agree with others in it sounding odd. I hope you hear back from them about maybe doing a check! I would look elsewhere if they come back (or don’t even...) saying no.

Our venue required a non refundable deposit. The deposit went towards the total price of the venue. I paid with a check.

We had to pay 50% of our venue fee up front to reserve the date (although it’s BYO vendors so less expensive than all inclusive). We had the option of check or Venmo.

We also had to put down a non refundable deposit, but for $3k with the remaining balance due a month before the wedding, but we paid with a check.

Its probably not the venue you’re actually talking to, it’s probably a scammer. There are tons of people being scammed through Zelle. Do a google search of Zelle scam.

We gave them a check and all other monies will be given in that way as well. The Zelle thing is weird for a business to me.

Ours required a $500 deposit to secure the date. Any payments after are on our terms but have to be paid fully a week before the wedding. I've never heard of using Zelle for the deposit. Makes me question it. My venue gave us the option of paying all in cash with no fees or paying with credit card with a 3% fee. All my payments have been with cash and I've gotten a receipt every time.
Tell them you'd be more comfortable paying everytime at the venue. That's how I'm making my payments. See what they say.
