Venue closing after my wedding!

Marina, on October 17, 2015 at 6:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Omg what to do!? Should I panic?? I just found out that my venue is closing for good a week after my wedding! I have people coming all over the world for this. Should I be concerned? Is there anything I should do? My concern is the service will suck cause they wouldn't care

Why would you panic? It's closing after your wedding. I'm sure the service will be fine.

I wouldn't worry. The service should remain the same and be everything you booked your venue for! Not if they were closing down because of a rat infestation or something like that, I would freak out. If they are just closing down for renovations or something along those lines, I wouldn't worry Smiley smile

I totally understand why you would panic. I have worked somewhere that was going under. The job got done but people definitely did not go over the top. I would worry. Maybe speaking with your contact at your venue will reassure you it will be business as usual(hopefully). Best of luck <3

Did they mention a reason why they were closing?

No. I found out in error from another fellow bride in my area. So I emailed asking and all she said was. Closing for good. I didn't respond back. I think more questions should be in person at this point. I was just there last week and they were soo nice! I so hope they stay nice

I've done weddings at two venues I can think of that closed right after my couples weddings. They were fine,

Closing a business, especially one that has a significant amount of employees, is heart wrenching. I know, I did it. Btu I think you deserve to have a conversation with them; if nothing else, it will ease your mind.

Marina, are they closing because of a foreclosure on the property? That is a matter of public record. Go to the county court house (the county in which this venue is located) and find out for yourself if the venue is being foreclosed on or if it's being sold in a short sale or a conventional sale. Once you've ascertained that info, bring it back here. Maybe we can help you figure out your next step (and yes, you should be concerned. We're just about to move into the holiday season, and after that, it's on for your wedding. You need clarification. If the property is in foreclosure, you need the name of the attorney representing the property and the plaintiff). Get the dates on the documents and pay attention to the court date. Keep us updated -- this is important, important, important!

Thank you everyone!! I would hate to think it's from bad business..they have events there practically every night and I heard ONLY great things from everyone. They even had four weddings there twice and won both times

I don't want to scare you, but this happened to me, as did your fears. I didn't know my venue was closing until after my wedding. They closed about 3 weeks later. By the time my wedding rolled around, the news broke out among the staff of what was happening, and everyone of quality quit before our day. The ones that stayed were just there for a paycheck and couldn't care less. We had to deal with everything from our coordinator quitting 18 days before our wedding, to horrendously rude staff, to little things like steak knives being missing. I didn't understand why it was so bad until after when I heard the news. They also jacked the prices up for everything from golf carts to activities on the venue to get as much money out of the last few as they possibly could before the closing. It sucked. It was heart breaking to see brides I knew get the treatment we were supposed to get at the same venue, just because their weddings fell just weeks before shit hit the fan. You should be prepared for all of this. It SHOULDN'T happen, but it did to me, and I wish I at least had some warning like you got. My biggest advice is to make sure you have a coordinator not related to the venue there to be on your side in case anyone with resentment from the closing doesn't feel the need to do their job.

I was going to comment on this saying that I remember someone on here posting about this happening to them...but turns out it was KM and she already told her story.

I'm so sorry this is happening. I really hope that the people there still care and that they still do a good job, but I would probably expect them to not really put a lot of effort in if they know they're closing. I second KM's advice in making sure you have a DOC to work with you and double and triple check with the staff to make sure that everything will still be taken care of and get things in writing over emails in case things don't happen you can try to follow up on it with a lawyer if it's really awful.

But hopefully they will still stay professional, remember that even if things go wrong it will still be an amazing day, let's just hope that no big things go wrong!

Ugh! Sorry you are going through this, how stressful! Go meet with them face to face and get more details. I would consider my options of how much I paid them and would loose out on if FH and I changed venues. Losing $1,000 deposit would be worth it to me if I could find a new venue that would ensure great flawless service. I wish you the best and hope all turns out well.

I've been booked with them since July 2014 so we have been making payments. The venue will cost me around $15k. And we already paid $13k can't cancel at this point. I googled the venues closing and nothing yet. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do yet but I may call and speak with the manager but I will try to go there next weekend to talk face to face

Not that this is super helpful, but businesses close for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with quality or them not making money. The owners are people, too, and they have to make professional decisions based on personal matters all the time-- perhaps there is a family illness that requires them to relocate, or that would make running a business impossible. . .

Also, I haven't been in this exact situation, but I've been to restaurants in the last couple of weeks before closing (and after the staff already knew), and there was no issue with service and the staff was all the same people as before-- so, it really depends on the business. Hopefully they've been good to their staff so that they've cultivated some staff loyalty and they'll be there to stick things out until the end. If I remember correctly from KM's story, that wasn't the first planner to leave her venue in the course of her planning, so I suspect the staff was super unhappy to begin with. I do agree that having an independent coordinator will help give you some peace of mind.

Barbara: don't take this as bitchy because...text, but I had the same planner from the day I booked in August 2013 to 18 days before my wedding when she quit due to getting married herself and wanting a job closer into town so she could spend more time with her new husband instead of commuting 45 minutes to my venue. She was supposed to wait until after my wedding to go, but was offered a job she couldn't refuse. I was told that she was really the glue that held everything together, so when she left, so did everyone else. She had a replacement but her replacement was not up to par. I honestly have no idea how the staff felt about working there before my wedding.

ETA: I misread it! I agree with others, you need to have an honest conversation to make sure the service is what you expect. For example, something as simple as they still have everything in stock (food, alcohol)

I can tell you that three of my vendors - my wedding was their "last wedding". I booked one in May of 2014, September of 2014, and October of 2014 for my October 2015 wedding. I am not going to say who but one of them you could tell was not prepared nor wanted to be there and it caused an issue the evening of my wedding. Another vendor told me they were "getting out of weddings because they are just too much to deal with every weekend". Yea, this made me feel super confident (note the sarcasm). I would be freaking out if I were you.

If you don't yet have it, get wedding insurance. And get your own planner/coordinator.

What does wedding insurance do? What does that cover and how does it work?

It will cover you if they decide for any reason to close before your wedding. When my venue closed, they cancelled on a bunch of brides, some of who's weddings were just a few weeks away
