Vendors not taking credit cards

Stephanie, on November 16, 2017 at 8:51 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 32

Ok so my florist is the most reasonable in the area, but she doesn't take credit cards! Actually the only two of my vendors that DO take credit cards is my venue and my dj! Quite personally I'd rather get the points on my credit card. Has anyone run into this or is it still common for businesses to not take credit cards?

We had a few vendors only take cash/checks. We saved up cash, but we preferred to use a card, get points, and then just pay that off. I had to pay the florist, dj and photographer with check/cash.

I haven't run into that issue except for my photographer, she accepts CC for a deposit but the remainder must be in check. They probably don't want to pay the CC processing fees.

Most of my vendors do not, are only allow the deposit to go on the credit card. The fees can be really high on large purchases, so it can be seen as lost revenue.

I think this might be more common than you think...most of our vendors require check or cash. If you think about it: the CC works out great for you, but with processing fees of anywhere from 2-5% (or more!), that's a lofty fee for the vendor to pay and they add up quick.

We don't normally take credit cards either. Although, we will but we do charge 3% because the CC companies charge us. Cash, check, and money orders are the norm for us.

I am about half and half. The ones that don't take cards said it is because of the fees and said they would do it, but the fee would be my responsibility. For those vendors I used a check, but I prefer to use my credit card to get the miles.

We don't take them either; the fee, though it seems little, kills us and we can't legally charge more to cover it.

What you might do is see if your credit card company issues checks against your card. Many do, especially at this time of year, but make sure you're clear on the fee to you.

We are paying everything in cash and the venue is actually giving $5 off per person for doing cash. We also got a discount from the dj for doing cash. It never hurts to ask for a cash discount.

Mine were split. We had vendors that only took cash/check and others took credit. Some charged to use the credit card also.

Almost all of the venues we spoke to would only accept cash/check after the initial deposit. All our other vendor would take a form of card payment (credit or debit)

The only snag we hit was our photographer who is not yet set up to accept credit card. She recently left being the assistant/second shooter for another photographer in our area to start her own business as a photographer and so wasn't yet set up to accept credit cards, but would accept payment via venmo/paypal, cash or check.

I think that if you are dealing with small businesses you are more likely to find the cash/check only policy. They don't have the volume to make up for the fees charged by the card companies.

I think I have paid every vendor through PayPal.

My caterer is the only one that does not take credit card. I totally get it - they also dont take personal checks for the final amount though so im going to be running to the bank a few days before the wedding to get a bank check and then deliver it to their office, which i am not too thrilled about.

All of ours take credit cards. All of our deposits were made via credit card. We'll likely pay off the big ticket items (venue and caterer) with American Express since they will back you with no problem if there is an issue. We'll pay everything else with cash/check.

Our venue (which included the DJ) and pastry chef did not take credit cards. Our photographer did, but he offered us a 5% discount for cash so we gave him cash. We paid the florist by CC. When I calculated how many points I would miss out with the venue, it was only worth about $135 and since I was able to negotiate my minimum from 75 to 70, saving about $875, I didn't concern myself with the lost points.

If you want, you can mention to the venue that since you can't use your credit card and will miss out on points, can they throw in X. You should know how much those points are worth before asking since you don't want to ask for something worth $500 if you are only missing out on $100 worth of points. Doesn't hurt to ask gently. If they are already throwing in extras, don't bother asking.

Only one of my vendors didn't take credit cards, so I had to write a check. It was so annoying because I had to mail it, and it took over a month for them to get it and cash it. Right after they cashed it, they then decided it would make life easier for everyone if they started accepting credit card payments.

I think our bakery and our caterer were the only vendors that took cards, we used checks for everything else.

I don't think any of our vendors took CC except our bakery. Like others mentioned, the processing fees are killer.

I take credit cards, through gritted teeth...usually my fees on a credit card transaction are in the triple digits. It sucks, especially for wedding vendors because our transactions are typically in the thousands of dollars. It's honestly cheaper for me to offer a cash discount than it is for me to take a credit card, so I offer that in hopes people will take advantage of it rather than pay with credit.
