Vendors not Responding?

Felisha , on March 17, 2018 at 3:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 23
First off, I would like to say that I am not a first time bride. I was married young and divorced within 5 years. That’s a long story for another time. That said, I’m certain the majority of my anxiety stems from the complete and utter disaster that was my first wedding. Nothing went right. No matter how much I planned, I felt like I was doing everything myself and I just couldn’t do it all. This time around, I set a long engagement to give myself time to prepare better and I’ve been trying to allow other people to help me. Last time I tried to DIY everything— because I’m a control freak and also because I was young and just starting out. I didn’t have a bunch of disposable income to throw at a wedding. This time I’ve been trying to hire vendors I can trust to take care of things that I would normally obsess over myself. BUT... I am seriously struggling to get some of them to respond to me. I was wondering if it’s because the wedding is still 14 months away? We set a date for May 4th, 2019. I figured hiring vendors now and getting them paid off before the wedding was so much smarter than waiting until the last minute. I feel like I haven’t been made a priority and I’ve been pushed to the back burner and left to be dealt with closer to the time of the wedding. Is this normal? Am I overreacting?

I'd say most vendors are entering their busy season for 2018 brides. I think 2019 brides just aren't a priority yet. :/

I totally get that. But some of them, my coveted photographer for example, that I bent my budget to incorporate her fees, hasn’t even got back to me with a contract. I want to be able to pay the retainer and at least know that I don’t have to keep looking for another photographer that I love.

Are these vendors you already booked? I've seen quite a few times on this forum that the initial contact to vendors through the vendor tab is glitchy, and they don't receive all the messages. It would be best to contact the vendors directly, if that's the case.
Tip: Do not pay vendors early-so much can happen such as businesses going bankrupt, etc (I've seen it a few times here). Only pay when the invoice is due

No, they have not confirmed booking. That’s what is making me anxious. I’m just trying to pay my deposits right now. I just want to know I don’t have to keep searching for someone to fill that service.

I have texted and emailed, but haven’t heard anything in 4 days. We were supposed to have a phone conference this weekend, but no time was set. I just want to know when I need to be available. But I’m thinking I probably need to let that one go and keep looking. I *really* wanted to hire her.

I had to call multiple times to get a response, after emailing them and waiting weeks they finally answered after I called. Sometimes you have to be persistent

I'm getting married after you and vendors have been very responsive for me. They are quick to get me proposals, quotes, and contracts. I find their lack of response odd, if it's happening generally. Are you in a really small town or do these vendors not have staff to answer emails? That sucks and I'm sorry they aren't treating you like a priority.

My vendors don’t necessarily respond in a day or so, and my wedding is 2 months away. I would give them a week at least. Or try calling. If they really stop contacting you and you don’t have a contract, keep looking.

I agree also a 2019 we are not priority. I. Know you want to secure your vendors however my suggestion is too pay deposits. And pay off balances closer to wedding date.

I live in an “average” size area, but our venue is in a more country/remote location. To be honest, there are probably plenty of vendors out there that would be willing to work with me, it just seems the ones that I REALLY want won’t call me back.

@plangalCG We had talked about having a phone conference this weekend, I just didn’t know what time and I haven’t heard back since then. I’m going to give it the weekend and I guess if I don’t hear from them, I’ll keep looking.

@Cynthia Mostly I just wanted to be able to pay my deposits and secure my vendors. I wanted to be able to know I didn’t have to keep looking for vendors.

Are there any bad reviews for any of them? I was looking at a stylist/MUA who I didn’t hear from for 2 weeks after contacting them. I looked on here and though they had lots of positive reviews, there were enough ones about bad communication that I decided not to go with them.

You know, I actually hadn’t even thought to look. I saw a bunch of positive reviews and didn’t dig any further. I’ll have to look into that.

I understand going forward just like vendors have us sign a contract or have a consultation until they actually write a contract. You should do the same let potential vendors know if they can not respond back to you within 72 business days you will seek another vendor.

I mean, four days isn’t an unreasonable response time for a wedding that is over a year away. I had vendors that didn’t respond for two or three weeks, and that was after they were already booked! If it’s somebody you really want, they are probably busy. I wouldn’t get too worked up until it’s been a week or two weeks.

I’m also getting married on May 4, 2019 (hey date twin!!) but I haven’t had this issue at all. I’ve always had a response within 2-3 business days. I would probably forget about any vendors that don’t respond in a timely fashion - it would just make me worry about how their communication would be down the line, when the wedding is coming up and you really need them. There are plenty of vendors that prioritize all potential business, whether it’s next month or next year. I know it’s disappointing when you have your heart set on someone, but you’ll probably thank yourself later!

I would definitely say it is because of the time you have which is frustrating, but they should at least be letting you know that they are busy with weddings, and will be in touch soon.

Well, it has now been a week. I don’t think I would be as anxious if I had already been able to book her. We talked about speaking over the weekend to discuss options and get a contract in place, but I haven’t heard anything since. At first she was very responsive. She responded every day for the first week that we talked and then suddenly nothing. I’m going to wait a few more days and then move on. Hopefully I fall in love with someone else’s work like I did with hers.
