Most vendors on here would say avoid thumbtack. They're usually newer inexperienced people. You'll get what you pay for

I've been to thumbtack for a few things wedding related and it never works out. They either don't have someone available, or it's someone with not so great reviews. Try the vendor tab on here or the knot.

I've used thumbtack for other things like moving and have had a good experience. I'm not sure that I would trust them with my wedding video though. Although, if the choice is between no video or someone just starting out then I would still want to have it. Good luck.

I'm using thumbtack for a couple of things. Just make sure to read all of their reviews and look at examples of their work. We hired our photographer from there, but had him do engagement photos first to make sure they were what we wanted. We picked our videographer from there as well, but I spent a lot of time watching all of his wedding videos on his website and reading reviews. There were a few on there I never would have chose, but with the right amount of research, it can work out really well.

Don't use Thumbtack. They have to bid for your business.

I'll be honest - I found my amazing photographer through Thumbtack (usually 3x my budget, but was planning on moving to my area and was willing to come down on price to have jobs lined up here). You just have to be willing to do a tonne of research on the people that contact you. Our other options were totally, unfathomably useless.

If you use it, make sure to do the research before you contact people. The vendors on there have to pay to send you quotes. Don't leave them hanging!

I know it's an unpopular app here, but I used it to find my photographer off a recommendation from a friend and I love her! My friend (already married) used it for photographer and videographer, both her photos and video are beautiful. I do agree that most people on there are just starting out, so be sure to heavily vet if that's the route you go.

I started out my career by using Thumbtack. It was great for that, because I was new to the photography field and charging less than many people. Lucky for customers, I have a good eye, take beautiful photos, and am great with customer service.

However... I now despise Thumbtack from the vendor point of view because they have outrageously increased the prices for us to quote. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - if you are a customer requesting a quote, respond to the people who spend the money (a lot of money - usually $20 or more) to send you a quote and message!!!! Even if it's just to say "Thank you, but we decided to go with someone else." I have spent hundreds of dollars providing quotes (within the listed budget!) and messages to customers and most people don't even have the common courtesy to respond. This is rude, disrespectful, and unacceptable. I wish Thumbtack held customers requesting quotes more accountable.

If you're looking for someone cheap, try Thumbtack. But it won't give you an idea of who is truly available for services in your area because 1) most pros don't use Thumbtack and 2) only the first five people who respond will get to send you a quote/message. So if there are 20 great videographers in your area, it won't matter, because only the first five can send you a message.

If you decide to consider hiring someone from Thumbtack, do your research! Cross check reviews on other sites and ask to see a lot of his/her work. Use Thumbtack with caution.

Thank you all for your input. I have one quote so far and I started looking in to their work and it is not worth it. I would rather spend money on a professional.

I started contacting more in our area, I just didn't think most would be available this late!

I found my wedding planner off thrumbtack and I seriously got lucky. She is amazing but she is just starting out from a hobby to a business. She told me exactly what Rachel said. She said she has to bid on clients on each request. I felt back because I also sent a request for DJ, and caterers but both were really bad with no internet presence or reviews when I searched them so I declined all the bids.

Using thrumbtack,IMO is better than using a friendors or trying to do it yourself though

None of my colleagues use it. It's mostly for people starting out and those who can't fill their calendars any other way.

And yes, we have to bid to contact you, and generally, you're going to get the first five desperate people to respond.

I"d use the vendor tab here and contact your other vendors for recommendations; it's still sorta off season so you might be surprised.

I got two responses through TT searching for my dj (didn't know about the bid process at that point) one didn't even use my name, called me Stephanie instead of Samantha, so no. I did not respond. Like, my name is right there.

The other one who responded turned out well, his company had an Internet presence and a lot of reviews, as well as references. I spoke with him on the phone and communicating via email was a breeze. So he's our dj now.

No matter where you find potential vendors though, do your research.

I attempted to find a florist on Thumbtack when I first started planning. Everyone I kept getting was like 2 hours away and charging me a mileage fee so I said screw this.

I found my caterer through Thumbtack and she's absoluetely amazing. Going to see her and taste test next month! I also found my cake lady through Thumbtack as well, also amazing (who was also at my venue's summer showcase this past summer). Neither of these vendors are new to the business.

As a vendor myself, I've used Thumbtack before. I generally avoid using sites like it because you end up pricing yourself way too low to compete with people who have no idea what they're worth, but I also get to pick and choose which quote to respond to. If I see someone who actually has a realistic budget for what they want, I'll bite. Same goes for other professionals.

So the old saying goes - you get what you pay for. If you send out a $50 request for an entire custom invitation suite design that will take me 10 hours, you're going to get quotes from someone with a pirated copy of Photoshop who has only ever designed a flyer for their mom's book club. Research what's reasonable and set your budget for that Smiley smile

Yes, I found my officiant and photographer on Thumbtack. The reviews were great and the photographer's portfolio was great.
