Vendor tips: cash or check?

How are you tipping / did you tip your vendors: in cash or with a check? Starting to put together our day-of tip envelopes and wondering what's preferred? Starting to put together our day-of tip envelopes and wondering what's preferred?

There are some vendors to whom we would like to give big tips (like our planner who stepped up bigtime after my mom died recently), but I feel weird putting that much cash in an envelope...

Help??

I'm doing check. You can still adjust the amount of check on the day of. I don't want to be carrying close to a thousand dollars the day of the wedding. If I was only tipping my vendors $20 or less, then maybe I'd do cash, but I plan on tipping at least 20% if they do a great job.

Cash, especially since you are usually tipping the human, as an individual, not the company.

I will probably be doing check for larger tips, cash for smaller tips

I would do cash. It gives people to claim the tip or not. Some

Tips also get divided amongst multiple people. Cash is the easiest to do this for.

Checks for payments, cash for tips. As PPs have mentioned, vendors can claim or not claim if paid in cash. Also its a tip, so no need to track it for your purposes really and you can adjust it depending on quality of service up until last minute. We put cash in envelopes and had BM give to each of the vendors.

This should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway:

If you pay anything (payment or tip) via check, make sure you have the correct first and last name of the person to whom you are giving it. I used to be a bank teller, and I can't tell you the number of times (usually around holidays or wedding season) where someone came in with a check made out to "The Mailman" or "The DJ" Unfortunately, those are non-negotiable . . .

That being said, I plan to tip in cash. We'll make up the envelopes ahead of time and ask either of fathers or the BM to hold onto them for us.
