Vendor tips: cash or check?

MS1026, on July 12, 2016 at 11:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 26

How are you tipping / did you tip your vendors: in cash or with a check?

Starting to put together our day-of tip envelopes and wondering what's preferred?

There are some vendors to whom we would like to give big tips (like our planner who stepped up bigtime after my mom died recently), but I feel weird putting that much cash in an envelope...

Help??

I vote cash. But my question is do you have to tip?

    @Karen thank you <3

@Kisha I don't think one has to tip, but from what I have read, it is generally expected, unless the vendor owns their business. Some of our vendors have gone above and beyond what we initially contracted, so we want to show our appreciation!

Do check!!! If for some weird reason they say they never got a payment from you, you always can go back on your bank statements or print the cashed check! As for cash you cant really do that (if you want want to give your bank account number, you can give a cashier check or money order) but always have trace of where the money went (you cant do that with cash) trust me I know I use to work for a bank and I would here horror stories... better to be safe than sorry

    Sorry for your loss. *hugs*

Cash for smaller amounts... if it was a larger amount I'd also personally write a check.

The payment check but for a tip cash. Mostly just because you can change the amount that day. Ex you had set aside xyz fit dj, dj is not on time well he just lost x. Catering company was serving cold food they lost xy and maybe z.

I would tip on cash so they can claim it as they wish, or not. I wouldn't write checks for tips.

I'm a huge fan on Real Simple magazine. Here is their tip guide (which we will probably follow): http://www.realsimple.com/weddings/budget/guide-wedding-tipping

    TL;DR: Cash

Cash for day-of tips. We sent a few vendors gratuity after the wedding day because they did such an awesome job, so that we had to send via check.

I'm doing cash. If it was a check I'm afraid they'd have to claim it on taxes.

Payments in Check (traceable), Tips in Cash

Im sorry about your mom. You may also consider a small but thoughtful gift for those who really stepped up. Like did she ever mention a favorite restaurant she would love to try?

ETA: Courtney as someone who bartender a LOT of weddings and later owned the business that offered such service that article sucks. The tip ratio is fair but the other advice throughout is not great.

Thank you all! Based on all this (especially @FallBride and @MrsToBe), I will do cash for day-of for everyone except my planner, to whom I want to give an amount I wouldn't feel comfortable with giving in cash.

    Thank you, everyone!
