Vendor Shopping for Same-sex Weddings

Richard, on October 21, 2019 at 10:05 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 3

I'm curious about how other same-sex couples shop for vendors, and what criteria is important to them for all of their vendors or just for some.

For us, having a gay wedding in Seattle has, so far, presented no issues, but what about in other parts of the country that aren't as open and accepting?

We all know about the bakeries that have turned couples away. Have any of the couples here experienced anything similar?

We haven’t had anyone “turn us away,” but we’ve had vendors who sent us info sheets to fill out, then not reach back out to us once they saw that we replaced “Groom’s Name” with a second bride. I think all the publicity the cake shop got has scared them into hiding their prejudices.

Representation was huge for us when it came to picking our photographer and videographer. We checked out their social media and if they only had photos of stereotypically attractive cis hetero couples, we knew they weren’t for us. Other than that, we really just asked friends from the community about the vendors they had worked with. It’s super convenient that all of the vendors on WeddingWire are LGBTQ friendly, so you don’t have to worry about having that awkward conversation.

Not a same-sex couple but I live in Buffalo, NY and haven't heard of anyone having issues here. I assume venues are probably the toughest part. When looking for vendors though, we have looked through portfolios and have always went with vendors who have same-sex or interracial couples. Because we want to spend our money on accepting people who believe in LOVE.
