Vendor Insurance

Bethany Ann, on January 20, 2017 at 9:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Our venue requires all vendors to provide proof of insurance prior to our wedding day. The DJ we have been speaking with (has done over 1,000 weddings and has good reviews) doesn't have regular insurance. He said most venues don't require it, but he can get a one day policy for an additional cost. Is it typical for venues to require insurance? Is it typical for a DJ not to carry insurance. I'm not sure if I should look for a different DJ or if my venue has higher standards?

If you really like him and can afford it then get the one day additional insurance. I talked to some venues that wanted this. Mine did not, but they required wedding insurance, it was not expensive at all.

I personally have not heard of DJ insurance but I think you might want to ask your venue specifically because at the end of the day, it's their hoops your jumping through

Yes, I definitely feel like it's jumping through hoops. We have to carry wedding insurance, plus all our vendors have to be insured :/

I don't know if it's common, but my venue also requires all vendors to have insurance policies.

Your Dj is wrong. Almost every venue I work at requires insurance from every vendor except officiants. And every vendor that I recommend has it; it's the part of being a pro.

He needs to provide it, and it's his problem to get it.

Honestly, I can't even imagine a pro who doesn't carry insurance; that is far too risky.

I'm an independent contractor for my job, and although I work at a hospital that has insurance, and the larger medical system has insurance - I'm still required to have my own insurance too - and I'm not a doctor - the likelihood I'm going to hurt someone is SUPER low - but having insurance is better than having a single issue where I get sued.

I wouldn't think it's totally out of the ordinary. My venue states I can have any vendors I want, as long as they're insured. I'm more surprised your DJ doesn't have any policy than I am it's required.

My venue requires all vendors to have insurance, and I would think as a wedding professional, all of your vendors should already have it.

Honestly a pro who doesn't have a liability policy is scary to me... I would keep looking.

My venue required we buy insurance for the day through them for $700. Also all vendors are required to carry insurance. Even my decorators have to be insured for 1mil min. I would look for another DJ asap

Regardless of whether venues require it, all your vendors should have liability insurance. It's an easy distinction between pros and non-pros; the pros all have business insurance.
