Vendor insurance - buy online?

Lisa, on March 7, 2013 at 12:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Our venue is requiring that our vendors have commercial general liability insurance coverage up to $1 million. Our DJ has asked his car insurance agent about obtaining such insurance, and I have asked my car and homeowners insurance agents, and we are not getting anywhere. Does anyone know of a reputable company online where a DJ can purchase such event insurance that meets this requirement? Thanks!

    Your venue might be able to provide you with information as to where vendors can get insurance. Our venue also gave the option of getting insurance if the DJ didn't have his own...

    Your vendors should have insurance on their own; this is different than wedding insurance, which you buy (and it's a good idea). That covers you however, not them. It's for couples, not for vendors. You can't insure your vendor.

    I would never use an uninsured vendor, and almost none of our venues here will let them in without a million of coverage. The only exception is usually the officiant (I guess we're not perceived as dangerous....)

    We get our Insurance through the American Disc Jockey Association. This is much different than what your "DJ" can get through his automobile policy or otherwise. The issuing agency is R.V. Nuccio and Associates, and the carrier is Fireman's Fund Insurance (A+++ rated).

    If I'm not mistaken, Wedsafe is not going to cover your DJ or the venue and they will not provide an "also insured" rider which is essentially what the venue wants.

    We are asked to periodically show not only proof of insurance, but also an endorsement so the venue is "also insured" under our policy in case we cause a catastrophy.

    Good luck!

    Like others said - vendor insurance is something each vendor should have on their own. Maybe direct your DJ to a vendor site so he can research this on his own. I don't think you'd be able to get a quote or policy for him to have pro insurance even if you wanted to, it probably depends on his business, credit, etc.

    My photographer explained her insurance this way - once, when she was shooting a wedding at a park, she tripped backwards over a log into a lake, dropping her camera and spraining her ankle. Her pro insurance covered all of that. Likewise - at our wedding, someone on the dance floor tripped over a tripod and shattered this very expensive-looking light bulb. Her insurance covered that too.

    On the other hand - wedsafe would have covered us if, say, a tealight caught a centerpiece on fire causing smoke damage to the ceiling. Thankfully we did not have to test that out. Smiley smile

    Insuring your vendor is not your responsibility, it your vendors. If your DJ is asking you in any way, shape or form to take part in finding him any kind of coverage of any kind, shame on him. How very unprofessional. I would look elsewhere for a DJ.

    @Anna T.

    Wedsafe does NOT provide insurance for vendors. It's insurance for you, the consumer (or in this case, bride/groom), in case something at your wedding causes harm or requires repair to their venue. Your DJ must have a commercial liability policy.

    I have an uncle that is a DJ and he uses www.filmemporium.com/special-events for all his inusurance. They are a reputable online insurance company. They are also very good at explaining what kind of insurance is needed for different things. My fiance and I got our wedding cancellation insurance through them as well. Hope that helps!
