Vendor Arrested for Fraud? Options?

Future Louie, on July 23, 2019 at 8:44 AM Posted in Planning 0 4
So, I had hired a videographer through one of those local FB wedding groups. I (thought I) did my research on him and his company and nothing popped up out of the ordinary so I happily booked so I had some form of video of our wedding. I pay the deposit, and about a week later he offers to lower my full payment if I pay off early. I say, sure no problem, wedding is in a couple of months anyway I wouldn’t mind saving a hundred bucks. Fast forward to two weeks until the wedding I need to confirm my vendors and their meal choices. I don’t hear from him so I message again two days later. Still nothing, send an email unsure if he’s been disconnected from social media but I’ve been trying to track him down. Still nothing. So I google his name and come to find out he’s been arrested for scamming four brides and either under delivering or not delivering at all. So understandably, I’m worried. I wake up this morning and find an email from him saying that he’s good to go and gave me his meal option - no mention of what has happened in the past month.

So, my options:
1. Explain that I’m aware of the situation he was in and I do not feel comfortable fronting him the travel charge I still owe. I will happily pay it day of if he shows.
2. Go about my business and hope he treats me better than previous brides.
3. Cancel and most likely not receive any of the money I paid.

At this point I’m leaning towards the first option but I also don’t know what I could do should he do the same to me he has done to previous brides. It does seem like he does deliver to some and those brides are happy. I’m just thankful this isn’t an integral part to my day, I just don’t want to be taken as a fool.

    This is a hard one!
I would contact him and just say while I was trying to track you down for your meal option I came across this information about previous situations. Just say all my vendors have been much more responsive but I am willing to trust you if we can agree I will pay the travel charge once you're on site the day of. If he's a professional he'll be fine.
If not or he does end up scamming you report it to the police immediately, bring all emails you sent him, print out whatever you found about his previous arrests. They should be able to advise you then.

Thank you!! This may be what I do. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt to redeem himself but also don’t want to just be handing him money. Appreciate your input!

Since he did contact you I wouldn't say anything at this point. He gave you his meal choice so it looks like he's coming, he probably doesn't want to go back to jail. But on the other hand if you say something he may not come. I would just keep my fingers crossed and hope he shoes up and gives you the video. And after you get your video then say something

Yea I would just hope that he treats yours way better than the other people. Hopefully he learned his lesson.
