Eh. I get the not serving meat for ethical/moral reasons but as per WW etiquette rules that I've learned, I see Elizabeth's point.

Say for example I was morally and ethically (and not because of my religion) against the consumption of alcohol and decided I wouldn't be serving it because of that. If I made a post about it on here asking for some great ways to serve nonalcoholic beverages to guests, I'd be told that I'm being an improper host and that my morals and ethics aren't other people's morals and ethics and that I should be serving alcohol to those who want it.

I've seen the argument enough times against the posters personal beliefs/morals and how they shouldn't affect proper hosting when it comes to serving alcohol. This same argument obviously can apply here.

Would I be pissy if I showed up to a wedding without a meat alternative? Not really, but I eat just about anything. However, not everyone is as easily appeased and some people will be upset that they didn't even have the option of choosing a nonvegan meal/app, and the whole point of a reception is to thank and show your guests that you appreciate them coming.

I actually have no problem with someone having a dry wedding if it goes against their ethical beliefs. I have several LDS friends, and I fully expected their weddings to be dry. I only get annoyed when people do it to be cheap and make up excuses like having alcoholics in the family.

I think that as long as the vegan food is good and filling, then there's no problem. I frequently make vegan food for myself without trying to because some of it is delicious. It doesn't have to be fake meat and cheese. Some of the best food in the world is vegan, but we don't think of it as vegan.

@ELK I should find my Farmer John shorts that say "the other white meat" on the ass and post a picture. The swag I get from meat companies is insane.

Elizabeth, I'm not passing along false information. Those are ALLERGIES, not due to the fact that it is a vegan food item. Allergies can be found in any kind of food or food prep.

What this comes down to for me is, as a guest, I would not want you to go against your moral/ethical beliefs to make me more comfortable, especially if I know about your belief. If the person is vegan because of a medical issue, it's a little different. I think, in that circumstance, that person should serve meat.

Proper labeling is key in any event where you have a large quantity of guests. If everything is labeled, I don't see the issue.

ETA: @Nikol -yes, you're going to have to do that.

@Elizabeth, glad to see your high horse hasn't thrown you off yet.

Why is this debate even still going? Good lord.

I agree with labeling the food and/or having the serving staff be knowledgeable of what is in each item and how it is prepped.

"Elizabeth, I'm not passing along false information. Those are ALLERGIES, not due to the fact that it is a vegan food item. Allergies can be found in any kind of food or food prep."

And yet, they're at the core of a vegan menu. And no, people who can't digest vegetables don't have an allergy any more than those who can't eat meat have an allergy. So yes, it is false information.

    @Flighty learn to cope. Really.

So, according to you Elizabeth, vegans only eat soy and copious amounts of vegetables? What an ignorant statement to make. The way you are "explaining" yourself comes across that food allergies are only found in vegan food. You're grasping at straws. There are other food options that a vegan can offer that won't make people deathly ill.

No @MrsKatie, I never said any such thing. What I said is that soy that many are allergic to is usually at the core of a vegan menu. How you got that I said they "only eat soy" or vegetables is beyond me. And I also never said that food allergies are only found in vegan food. Stop putting words in my mouth just because you have difficulty comprehending what I actually said.

FH and I are vegan. Our entire wedding is going to be vegan. No one expects us to change who we are for our wedding day.

Why isn't the whole issue of soy allergies solved with no hassle by the guest indicating it on their RSVP card? I don't eat mostly or even heavily soy, nor do most people I know. It certainly is not a difficult accommodation to make. It's just like any allergy, which is easily addressed in a vegan meal just like an omni meal.

Ok, so a lot of meat substitutes contain soy. Some higher quality products contain plant based proteins such as sweet pee. I'm sensitive to soy, but I know what I can eat and what I can't. A lot of vegan caterers will have a good balance, but some of the cheaper ones will choose cheaper products (obviously) and opt for stuff packed with soy. So I get what @elizabeth is saying.

On a side note, I had an amazing vegan portobello mushroom steak last week!

@AlwaysMs. people certainly can. I never said you shouldn't have a vegan wedding because of allergies. I said you shouldn't do it because it's rude. The point about allergies was only brought up because of the false claims that no one is going to get sick from one night of vegan food, which is a very poor and inaccurate generalization to make for the reasons I listed.

@Elizabeth, I am one of those people who are allergic food items that vegans often eat (many forms of soy and various nuts). But, I can still eat at vegan restaurants and enjoy myself. Why? Because the menus are clearly labeled and there are plenty of vegan dishes that do not include those items. Even though they are commonly used, there is still great variety in vegan dishes.
