Using my grandma's dress for...?

Laura, on June 4, 2010 at 11:19 AM Posted in Planning 0 17

My grandma and I have always been very close. She will be 89 at the time of the wedding and she is in amazing shape. She still lives in her house and is completely independent. I do worry that something is going to happen quickly and then she will no longer be with us. Anyway, her wedding dress is still hanging in her closet after 60 years. I am getting married one day before she did and I will be the same age she was when she got married. I was thinking of making something for my wedding out of her dress, but I have no idea what it should be! My mom suggested the FG pillow, but my FG is my FH's neice and she is not on our side of the family. I wanted to think of something that I could use it for. Any suggestions?

What about making a hankie out of it with Grandma on it, or wrapping ur flowers in some of it, or you could make a shaw out of it for her to wear around her shoulders. Not much help but just a thought

Can you take pieces of her dress and wrap your bouquet in it? If you want to use the FG pillow, I don't think it matters if the FG is your relation or not, as long as it's used in your wedding, it's special to you and your grandma, regardless of who carries it! And the niece will soon be yours also! Smiley winking

Not sure what its made of but have you thought about your garter? or maybe something to go over the alter or on the table like a runner where you will do your sand or candle ceremony??

I did think about maybe including it with the flowers somehow. I wasn't sure how that could be done but I bet my florist would be able to help. I did think of the garter too, however I was going to go a football garter that FH would like. I do like the idea of maybe making a table runner for the ceremony. I will have to think on this. Thanks for the advice so far, ladies Smiley smile

My daughter is using the lace from my dress to attach to the outside of square glass vases (to hold votive candles) that will be placed on the communion rail for the ceremony. Also, taking lace and attaching to the unity candle and smaller candles. I've heard of the pillows, bouquet wraps, hankies, even make into a purse for the wedding day - oh... and later - a baptism outfit for your children!

My bff makes amazing hand bags and mostly uses vintage fabrics. She is on WW and also has an etsy storefront. Take a look at what she does. www.fancibags.com

Sorry about the double post. I wrote it and then went hunting for the pic and it was gone when I came back - funny it showed up...

The pics of her bags are good but, the actual bags are stunning.

You're welcome jennhutch. She is amazing - just give her a bunch of scraps and she will make something beautiful! I'd say the same even if we hadn't been friends since grammar school.

Do you have your dress yet? Would you want to use your grandma's fabric for your dress?

The handbag might be an idea to think about. I will keep it in mind, Artistic. I do have my dress already so that won't be an option.

Another option would be to have a flower made for your hair if that is something you would like. That would take a very small amount of fabric leaving most of your Grandma's dress intact.

I made my daughter a garter out of mine. She wore a second one that was bought to be thrown. No way would I let her husband throw the one I made.I am planning to make nice lacey pillows and give to my children.Hopefully they will pass them down to their children one day.

You could also make a handkerchief and carry it as your something old.
