Using an iPod for ceremony music?

irin997, on November 5, 2010 at 10:47 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

So the DJ quotes I've gotten to provide ceremony music are absolutely ridiculous. We're talking around $225-$250 for prelude music, processional, and recessional. The ceremony itself is only going to be about 20-30 minutes.

I'm wondering if I can use a good iPod sound system instead. Has anyone done this? If so, how did you time the processional?

I have never done it, was going to do it, but my cousin and her husband said they would play the music for uson their guitar and violin. I would say the only way you would get the timing down pat is to pracrice, practice, practice at rehersal and have someone man it.

I have not, but friends of mine did. They just had a friend who was not in the BP stand with them and when it is ready they went to the front started the music had and extra 30 seconds and went back to to get them started. I will say even thou your ceremoy is only 20-30 mins long, they still have to travel, unpack and pack equipment, if they are doing your reception too you may be able to get them to bring it down if they do not have to move their stuff so far.

The DJ either has to set up 2 systems (1 for ceremony venue and 1 for reception vendue) or has to move the system from one venue to the other. All that takes time -- not just the 25 min. ceremony.

Right, I realize they need a separate system and it entails a lot more work and all of that. I just don't want to pay that much for a 30 minute ceremony, lol. I don't make $250 an hour, KWIM? I've had DJ's quote with the ceremony and without.

BTW the ceremony is in the same location, but it is outside behind the hotel. Maybe if we had the ceremony in the ballroom it would be less? But I want an outdoor wedding....

If the iPod didn't work, oh well! C'est la vie! The most important thing is that I'm walking away with my husband. It wouldn't ruin my day.

I am going to attempt this. My ceremony is outside, so I am going to get and outdoor sound system that has wireless speakers and a wireless transmitter that hooks right into your ipod. The sound system (which is about $100 for two speakers) that I am getting is for your deck or patio, so after I am done with it we are going to use it for our deck so its not like its a one time use thing. As for the timing, I am just going to practice and have somebody run the ipod to switch songs when needed or stop whenever.

We're doing the iPod. The musicians wanted $400 for the ceremony. The venue is providing us with their house sound system and we are going to plug in the dock to use. The wedding coordinator at the venue will have one of the staff on hand to start and stop the music at the appropriate time.

Ooooh I didn't think to ask if a staff member could man it. I don't want to ask a friend or family member to do it.

Although now that I think of it, a co-worker of mine did offer to play the piano (keyboard) for us at the ceremony. Maybe i should revisit that option...

The ipod will work with someone who really understands it running it. It would be easier to just plug your computer into the sound system and run the music from the desktop. You will have a lot more control.

The keyboard would be nice if you could get someone to do it. Be sure though they have sufficient speakers so that the sound doesn't get lost out doors.
