**UPDATE** Foundations!! Specific experiences and skin types requested

Atredis, on August 6, 2014 at 9:38 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

So, I have been researching a LOT about what is the best foundation to use for the wedding day. Everyday wear for me is Clinique, but I don't have high hopes that it will hold up to the long day and all the pictures.

I am willing to spend a bit to have great looking and flawless skin on my wedding day, BUT, I don't want to have to try out 5 things to get there. My skin is oily, it just gets shiny no matter what I try it seems. I use LORAC POREfection primer, and it still gets oily. I have some scarring from skin problems, and still get occasional spots, but those are fairly easy to cover up (I have Dermablend concealer)

That being said, the top picks (based on reviews and research) seem to be:

* MAC Pro Longwear

* MAC Studio Fluid Fix

* Smashbox Stuido Skin 15 Hour

*Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless

*LORAC POREfection foundation

I appeal to you, oh Guru's of wedding make up, to help me out with specifics and relation of experience with the above foundations. Thanks!!!!

    I'm using MAC pro longwear with MAC mineral powder. I did a trial with it and loved it but I will still probably keep tissues to blot any oily areas before photos. My nose and chin tend to become oily part way through the day regardless.

    Im not too sure on what foundation to go for, but have you also tried a setting spray?

    Urban Decay's "All Nighter" is pretty awesome and makes your makeup last longer.

    Do you have a Sephora by you at all? I think they carry most of those in store and they can give you a sample to take home and try out.

    @Sarah - Thanks for that! I will look into the Mineral powder too. The setting powder I use now is okay, but for the price, it's nothing special.

    @Truffle - I did just get an "All Nighter" sample. It seems to do well outside, but not inside for some reason. In my office all day, I still have to blot, but when I'm in the fresh air, it works really well. I do have Sephora near me, but I'm an Ulta girl. I've never tried talking to the MUAs at the store though. Just very awkward and self conscious about my skin. Maybe they do the same thing there?

    Im sure they do! In any case, it wont hurt to ask! With the price of makeup, you should be positive you love what you are buying.

    I'm pretty sure we have the same skin. My t zone gets really oily and it's as if my skin eats my makeup. I have seriously tried everything under the sun and have spent more money than I want to admit. My skin does get a little shiny/oily after about 6 hours, but a little blot and swipe of powder has me set for another 6 hours. This has been the best combination that I've found...

    I put a pea sized squirt of Smashbox photo finish primer on my hand and squirt the same amount of Smashbox CC cream on my hand and mix together. I apply to my face with a sponge. I then use Neutrogena translucent powder to set and a couple spritzes of Urban Decay All Nighter.

    I use the cc cream for both staying power on my face and because I have scarring and rosacea.

    I used to use MAC Studio Fix, but never with the Smashbox primer. I can tell you that without primer, my face got shiny and oily rather quickly.

    Mineral powder is NOT RECOMMENDED!!! My MUA said that mineral powder is similar to wearing SPF and can reflect light during photography, making your face look more washed out. She said that a liquid foundation was best.

    I've tried the Smashbox 15 hour and wasn't really impressed. I like a full coverage foundation and in my opinion it's too light in coverage and doesn't hold up even through a 12 hour work day. You might have better luck than me but I'd try the MAC

    I love the Smashbox 15 hour studio wear. I was skeptical because it is a medium-high coverage and was afraid that I would break out (I have cystic acne and can break out over touching my chin once). I bought it to do my own makeup and have worn it twice now all day and I am seriously in LOVE with it. I do not break out with it and my skin still feels like it can breathe.

    I really like Mac, but I use what you probably should not since I have dry skin--I use mac prep and prime bb cream over kiehls moisturizer.

    I love all things Urban Decay, but the bare naked line tends to be light coverage. I'm not sure if that's what you are looking for.

    Thank you everyone for your input!! So appreciated!

    What do we think about setting powders? I currently have Dermablend. It's okay, but I wonder if there is something much more "long lasting" for occasions like a wedding that will just act like the icing on the cake. Any suggestions?

    I have the same issue - my skin is oilyyyy! So oily. About a month ago, I start using tarte pure maracuja oil on my face, every few nights....and i kid you not, my oiliness has gone down SO much! it's ridiculous! oil gets rid of oil...so doing that might help with the oiliness.

    When it comes to foundation, the longest lasting I've found is Lancome Teint Idole Ultra 24H Makeup...! Even one of my besties recommended it to me, and I was just like, "girl i already have it!" The only issue is that it has SPF 15 in it...it does have some flash back. So idk if I'll wear it for wedding photos, but it's my go to makeup every other day!

    Edit: I'll probably try the Makeup Forever HD foundation for the big day - I've heard it's good! And I use their HD powder for setting powder - it's awesome!

    I use Palladio rice powder from Sally Beauty supply, and I love it. I feel like it's a well-kept secret in the beauty world. It mattes my skin for hours at a time. I plan to apply it on top of my MUA's application the day of my wedding, lol. Here's a link to the product on their website if you want to check out some of the reviews:

    @Kendra I have heard about that maracuja oil. I have read similar things about organic cold pressed coconut oil, which I put in food and cook with for it's astringent benefits, but am terrified to put oil on my skin. I know everyone says it's great, but those reviews of "Don't do it!! It ruined my skin!!" make me stay away! I will look into the Lancome, thanks for the tip!!

    @Cristi & Ryan - That's a great deal! I'll have to check that out at my Sally's

    I only have experience with Smashbox's liquid eyeliner and lipstick, but if I was made of money I would be swimming in their products. From what I've seen they are great for photos and VERY long lasting. I once accidentally fell asleep in my Smashbox eyeliner and woke up the next morning and it was still perfect!

    @Atredis - I had never heard any horror stories about oil on skin, in fact I've only ever heard good things! Different oils do different things, so you have to do some research. But the maracuja oil from tarte is awesome! I wouldn't use it a lot of it every night - I did at first and I broke out a little more than usual - but i think I didn't realize that such a little amount goes a long way! So don't overdo it Smiley winking it really brightens and fades dark spots! I use the maracuja under eye cream every night, too, and I loveee it.

    Also! Did some research tonight, and found out that the makeup forever HD powder actually causes the WORST flashback...apparently any HD powder does this!...and that the Lancôme teint idole foundation doesn't have titanium dioxide in it, which is the SPF that causes flash back! So tomorrow I'm gonna try using no powder and then taking a photo...I'll let you know what I find out!

    I have extremely oily skin, and I love my Make Up Forever Mat Velvet+. I love it so much, I can't bring myself to even try another foundation. I just don't need to! It's hard finding makeup for oily skin. This one is matte, full coverage. You can build it up in areas you need more. No SPF, and it lasts very well. I use blotting sheets for touch ups, and I can't imagine life without them. I use a primer, either the mattifying primer from Makeup Forever or I like the Benefit porefessional (if you have large pores that one is amazing) and I do use a powder to set the foundation. It doesn't really need to be set, but I am so oily I do it anyway. I have heard wonderful things about the Hourglass foundation for oily skin as well, my bestie swears by it and it looks amazing on her oily skin. Go to sephora and they will allow you to try samples of any foundation before you buy it!

    So I have super oily skin and acne scars... So similar to what you have. When I'm going to be taking pics, so going out or whatnot, I swear by both of these:

    Becca mattifying primer! It feels tacky and you have to warm it up in your hands first but DAMN does it keep oil away, I wear it every day for work too and nothing slides off. I'm in love! It's like $36 at sephora I think, totally worth it.

    CoverFX cream foundation... Not the mineral one. It's build able coverage and a heavier weight cream so it stays on and covers my scars without needing concealer. I'm in love. Use an airbrush brush though for it.

    I finish it with makeup forever HD powder finisher, which I also really love but I think the two above will help you a TON for what you're looking for!

    ETA: I used to wear the Mac Pro longwear foundation for everyday, and it slid off at the end of the day. Not a fan.

    MAC Face & Body is the best foundation I've ever used. I have combination skin and mild acne that'll occasionally pop up here and there. This foundation is more light-medium coverage and it doesn't feel like you have anything on! Photographs beautifully, no shine, and no SPF so you don't look like a ghost in pictures. I top it with MAC Studio Careblend Pressed Powder, which sets the foundation nicely and also doesn't cause any shine. Foundation stays in place. Love it!

    Thank you all so much!! Sometimes reading reviews online feels like some people are just making it up (when they are SUPER negative or SUPER positive) so it really helps to hear your own personal stories!

    Looks like I have to make a trip to Sephora or Ulta and actually talk to a MUA to get some samples of the suggestions above. Thank you all!
