Untraditional Guest Book

Veronica, on December 16, 2018 at 12:38 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7
HELP!
I am buying a slab of maple wood with live edges on the 21st for my untraditional guest book. I need help determining how to go about sealing it so it doesn’t crack or seperate from the edges, as well as what pens to use so my guests can write on it.
First, I want to have our names and date calligraphied in the middle and am not sure if I stain before the calligraphy and then seal after or do the calligraphy after it has been stained and sealed!
Second, will sharpies work on sealed wood? I would be using a silver or gold sharpie so standing out from the stain color isn’t the issue, I just don’t want my guests going to write with a sharpie and it not work!!

Any advice in either areas???
Thank you!

I guess I’m not picturing what you want to do for your guestbook, but my MOH and her husband had a wooden plaque that looked like a cutting board with their last name and wedding date on it. They used silver sharpies to write on it, and I believe it was varnished because it had a little shine to it. I’m not sure how well the names stayed on it though now that they’ve had it for a year now.

Here is a picture of what we are trying to do. In this photo, it doesn’t look like it is stained or sealed, but with my wedding be so far away, I need something so it isn’t going to crack.

I've never seen that before! That's really cool. Are you going to display it in your home after the wedding?

Honestly what I would do is find a sample piece of wood first and try varnishing it and let it dry. Then take your sharpies to write on it and see what happens.

Hey Veronica, welcome to the WeddingWire community!

That is such a cool idea for a guest book! I would think that sharpies should work on sealed wood, especially if it has plenty of time to dry! I feel like I would do the calligraphy before sealing it though, that way it'll have an extra layer of protection and won't wear away!
