Unreasonable dress budget?

Will it be completely impossible for me to find my wedding gown and have it altered, all for under $850? This is what I’ve budgeted, and I really don’t feel good about spending much more on something I’ll wear once. I’ve had multiple friends laugh at the idea, saying alterations alone will be $500...
Will it be completely impossible for me to find my wedding gown and have it altered, all for under $850? This is what I’ve budgeted, and I really don’t feel good about spending much more on something I’ll wear once. I’ve had multiple friends laugh at the idea, saying alterations alone will be $500 and I’ll never be able to do it. FH and I are having a fairly expensive wedding (average I think, for our area, but not a small budget by any means), but we’re foodies and love a good party, and so we decided to dedicate the bulk of our budget to an amazing caterer and premium open bar. We agreed that things like my gown, flowers, decor are lower priority in the budget (and I already found an amazingly low priced florist with great reviews).

I guess I’m just looking for encouragement from ladies that found their dream dress on a budget (and recommendations for where). AND for someone to tell me that I’m not doing things completely wrong...😕

$500 is a totally reasonable dress price. I paid $313 total for dress and alterations. The dress was from Bride to Be which is a wedding resale store. $225 for the dress, $8 for garment bag. It helped to shop around until I found a dress which already fit well. I adjusted the height of my shoes so that there was no need to alter the hemline, and I had $80 in alterations to the shoulder straps at a small independent business.

My dress was $730 on the internet. I was looking for this particular dress, but I saw many beautiful less-expensive options. I got mine from Tradesy.com, and my backup was thelastminutebride.com. I expect alterations to be around $300-$600; but that depends on how crazy I get!

Check stores that aren't necessarily "bridal," like Macy's, Dillards, etc. I ordered mine from Dillard's for $156. I haven't priced alterations quite yet but I need so few that I can't imagine spending more that $500 total.

I don't think so! I'd look at boutique stores, dresses at warehouse locations or closing boutiques, on Etsy or other stores online, or buy a sample!

How do you feel about renting a dress instead of buying one?

For cheaper wedding dresses you could buy an evening gown instea did the standard ‘wedding dress’ this would save you money. Good luck with your search
