Unreasonable dress budget?

Will it be completely impossible for me to find my wedding gown and have it altered, all for under $850? This is what I’ve budgeted, and I really don’t feel good about spending much more on something I’ll wear once. I’ve had multiple friends laugh at the idea, saying alterations alone will be $500...
Will it be completely impossible for me to find my wedding gown and have it altered, all for under $850? This is what I’ve budgeted, and I really don’t feel good about spending much more on something I’ll wear once. I’ve had multiple friends laugh at the idea, saying alterations alone will be $500 and I’ll never be able to do it. FH and I are having a fairly expensive wedding (average I think, for our area, but not a small budget by any means), but we’re foodies and love a good party, and so we decided to dedicate the bulk of our budget to an amazing caterer and premium open bar. We agreed that things like my gown, flowers, decor are lower priority in the budget (and I already found an amazingly low priced florist with great reviews).

I guess I’m just looking for encouragement from ladies that found their dream dress on a budget (and recommendations for where). AND for someone to tell me that I’m not doing things completely wrong...😕

I got my dress at David's Bridal for under $500. It's definitely doable. I'm not sure about cost of alterations bc I haven't done that yet.

You can absolutely do it for under 850. Lots of places, even David’s or Macy’s have white dresses that will stun. I got mine for 75 bucks and 30 dollars in alterations. You can absolutely do it! I have faith! I got mine at Macy’s around prom season. This was my dress.

Also, I went to a bridal shop that had a bunch of dresses under 1000 dollars, and alterations were a flat fee of $50 dollars if you bought the dress. I’m not sure where you are located but the shop is in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

If you buy something that needs minimal or no alterations for 500 and under you can most likely make it work. David's bridal has a great sale that has $99 dresses but also many other higher reatiled dresses marked down to $499. You can also buy from sites like preownedweddingdresses.com or stillwhite.

Also more fitted styled gown usually require more alterations and gowns that require a bustle so staying away from those styles may help keep alterations down in cost!

My dress was a sample gown at David's bridal that I got for 100 dollars, and my alterations will be no more than 200. It's totally possible.

I bought a new dress at a salon for $679 then had dress regret. I bought THE dress off the clearance rack at a different salon for $750. So yes, it if definitely possible - even without going online if you’re nervous about that. My dream dress has lace, a train and bling.

It Can be done! David’s Bridal has a sale right now. You can find dresses from $79.99 (depending on how simple you want to got) to 499.99 that are beautiful. You can definitely use the extra $350 for alterations or more if you get a cheaper dress which they had a few for $299.99. It definitely depends on the bottom style of the dress on how expensive the alterations will cost.
My budget was $1000 but I had really planned for $1200 just in case just for my dress. And I ended up going way under even with adding other things which you also have to think about. Veil, sash, head piece, jewelry, shoes, slip (if needed) , etc...
    I truly counted my blessings!!
    Dress
    Original $1000 sale $499.99
    Sash
    Original $99.95 sale $79.95
    Veil
    Original $149.95 sale $109.95
    Tiara
    Original $49.95 sale $24.97
    total of $714.86

I had money leftover for alterations. The bonus part is I decided to go with a corset back so I don’t need to get alterations on the top part only bottom which would save money as well. Good luck!! It’s definitely doable.

I got my dress on Hebeos.com and with shipping paid $115. And I've been quoted $100 for alterations because I purposely ordered a larger size since my paranoia of getting a dress online and being too small ran rapid! Lol

I'miss using a seamstress that works at a dry cleaners but used to work for Bloomingdale's and will charge way less than David's. You can join local Facebook swipe swap groups too if you have time to see if anyone is selling their dress, or sometimes brand new dresses due to dress regret, for less than full price.

I bought a Sample Sale dress at David's Bridal. Originally 1800 but I got it for 400. Havent found the imperfections on it so I doubt anyone else will either.

It is possible. I found my dress for $300 (at a liquidation sale) and took it to an independent seamstress. My alterations were $140 to add a bustle and shorten my lace straps. All in for my dress, alterations, and veil (which I got at JJsHouse) I spent $460.

I felt the same as you.. why drop 5k on a damn dress I'll wear once when that could be put towards a honeymoon, house, or something else.. I never stepped foot in a bridal shop, and I was a bit.. ok really nervous about ordering online. I found my dream pinterest dress on Amazon for UNDER $100. And it lived up to the hype I build up. With alterations and a custom off the shoulder Cape being made, the whole shebang is costing me about $500

Like others have said, totally possible. My dress was $450 off the rack at a local boutique. Alterations and cleaning/pressing came to $189. Shop around and be upfront about your budget and don’t be afraid to say no to trying on some dresses that are outside your budget. One store kept suggesting dresses for me that were more than I said my max was. Another option is looking at bridesmaids dresses in white or ivory.

Its definitely possible to find a dress within that budget, especially if you buy at the DB $99 sale, a sample sale, or preowned/online.

To cut costs on alterations, most girls I know have not gotten alterations done at the bridal shop. I'm hoping to get mine altered by the same seamstress who did all of my prom/homecoming/pageant dresses and is much cheaper than other places near me.
