Unpopular opinion: i think bustles are ugly

I'm having a hard time on what to do about the length of my gown. I understand the purpose of the bustle is to help the bride walk and not trip on her dress or get it dirty. But a majority of bustles look like someone took handfuls of the back of the bride's dress and just bunched it on her butt....

Although I'm not a fan, I'm not ruling out bustles for my dress. I'm just not sure what the best type is or what would look good. My first fitting will be in a few months and I'll get my alterations lady's professional opinion. My question is, have any of you avoided getting a bustle and how did it work out? What did you do instead of getting a bustle?

Unfortunately I cant find a picture of my dress online so I'll post one that looks like the closest to my dress. I'm open to people's opinions on what I should do or what kind of bustle you would recommend.

If it works with your dress you could try doing an under bustle. I don’t like the look of bustles either but I did an under bustle and liked the way it looked. It was a little more complicated to bustle it though.

I feel u. I do not want to bustle my gorgeous gown. So my seamstress is making me a wrist bustle i guess u call it, to carry my train on my wrist attached with a ribbon hook.

I’m not a fan of bustles either. I don’t remember what it is called, but my consultant at the bridal store was saying with some dresses, you can have the bustle underneath instead of on top. This really only works if you have a plain edge as you won’t see the hem of your dress. The dress we were looking at had a plain tule edge and you couldn’t tell at all. I’m hoping to do this with my dress, even if it looks a little off (I didn’t think to try it when I tried my dress so I’m not sure how it will look as it has a horsehair skirt).

I don’t have the bets photos unfortunately as they weren’t taken from the back, but maybe these will give you an idea of it, so you can ask the person doing your alterations?

I think this is a wonderful reference site for bustle types: http://www.leanna.com/Bustle/Bustles.shtml and you might see some that don't look like the fabric has been bunched up around the butt.

Some seamstresses call them by different names, but as PPs said, the ballroom bustle (gets bustled in the back at the waist), side bustle (sweeps to one hip), or underbustle (my seamstress calls it a bubble bustle).

    Here's mine as an example:

My mom didn't do a bustle with her dress when she got married. She just had a little strap that went around her wrist to hold the dress up. She said it was heavy Smiley winking her arm was killing her.

The last time I went to try my dress on, I noticed my dress came with one of these straps too! I won't be using it though. I agree, bustles look sorta weird. But I don't know if there's any other way!

I'm not a fan of bustles either. I love the train on my dress, not how it looks bustled. But, I also don't want to dance while carrying a train around all night. So bustling is the lesser of 2 evils.

I despise bustles. Work with your seamstress and they can help you! I had an underbustle, so my skirt just tucked under itself and didn't look bustled at all. Or you can do an English (I think...) where about mid way down your skirt they bring it up to attach at your waist in a few points. When they looked at this on mine it just made it look like a fuller skirt instead of any kind of bustle. I'm NOT a fan of the ones that gather at the but or anything so I feel you, but a good seamstress can find a more discreet bustle.

Especially because the fabric of your skirt is so full and unadorned, I would think a good seamstress could do an underbustle that would basically make it look like it was the same length all the way around. If you're really opposed to any kind of bustle, I'd consider having the train removed during alterations. I agree you will likely seriously regret using a wrist loop. The fabric of your skirt is heavy, and carrying it around all night might make you miserable (and, I'm not really sure how that looks better than a bustle -- just a lot more inconvenient). I understand where you're coming from on bustles, daughter was determined that she did not want to look "like she was pooping tulle".... Her dress had multiple layers. The seamstress bustled the tulle/lace layer to her waist and the heavier satin underlayers as an underbustle. Her dress looked lovely both bustled for the reception and unbustled for the ceremony. Good luck!

Even with a bustle I don't see how the bride can even dance or kick up her feet. Nope, no bustle for my dauther. She wants a short white dress and not an expensive one. She oops for wearing glitter tennis shoes as well. We will have some fun!
