Unpopular opinion: i think bustles are ugly

Melissa, on February 1, 2019 at 11:39 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 30
I'm having a hard time on what to do about the length of my gown. I understand the purpose of the bustle is to help the bride walk and not trip on her dress or get it dirty. But a majority of bustles look like someone took handfuls of the back of the bride's dress and just bunched it on her butt.

Although I'm not a fan, I'm not ruling out bustles for my dress. I'm just not sure what the best type is or what would look good. My first fitting will be in a few months and I'll get my alterations lady's professional opinion. My question is, have any of you avoided getting a bustle and how did it work out? What did you do instead of getting a bustle?

Unfortunately I cant find a picture of my dress online so I'll post one that looks like the closest to my dress. I'm open to people's opinions on what I should do or what kind of bustle you would recommend.

It’s hard to see how long your dress drags in the back, but another option is a wrist loop. I couldn’t imagine not having a bustle as I wanted to walk around and greet people and dance. Having to hold up my dress all night would’ve been a pain.

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. Bustles aren't really that great looking on most dresses, just a necessity. The only thing I could think aside from a bustle would be a wrist loop, but I'm not sure that would work for your dress, plus to me they just seem kind of inconvenient.

My dress is a cathedral length dress. I forgot that wrist loops are an option, thank you.

You're right, my dress is definitely heavy. I dont think I'd be able to hold it all night.

Following! I couldn't agree with you more.
I only have a chapel length train. However, I am very worried about how the bustle will look. When my dress came in and I went to try it on, I mentioned my concern to the consultant who helped me. She showed me an example of how it could be done and it looked ok.
I'll discuss it with the seamstress when I start my fittings as well.

I'm not a huge fan of bustles either! I agree, some are just unflattering. I'm bringing in VERY specific pictures to my alterations woman for the bustle, since I need it for my dress. A wrist loop is an option. Could you walk around the house in your dress & see if you feel like people would be stepping on it?

One idea suggested to me was to shorten my dress to a chapel length. But if you have a chapel length dress and still need a bustle, then I dont think itll solve the problem.

Unfortunately, I still dont have the dress with me. But when I tried it on at the bridal salon, it was hard to not have people step on it. I was thinking about bringing in some pictures of bustles I think are flattering as well to my alterations lady. I just hope it doesnt upset her if I dont take her professional opinion.

So the suggestion was to shorten to a chapel length and not have a bustle at all?

Yes. But I still think that a dress at that length would still be hard to dance in and not get stepped on.

She works for you, so if she doesn't agree to the type of bustle you want, then take the dress somewhere else!

I’m hoping to get mine with French bustles because the bustle I see a lot of people do is one that attaches right at the butt and I think it’s so ugly. Just think of it as a necessity though!

This exactly. There are lots of different types of bustles. I personally don't like the look of a French Bustle at all, so I’ll be doing an American / Ballroom (I swear everyone calls it something else, its the triple traditional in the link below) bustle that very naturally pulls the train up into the a-line skirt. This site is super helpful:

Same! I'm not a french bustle fan at all. From the site you posted, I'm hoping for the triple traditional or something similar too.

Well my idea is too late since you already have the dress but you could have purchase and unattached skirt and have a fitted dress under. This way you remove the skirt and keep just the fitted gown for the party. But too late for that.
I do want to say there’s a bustle that is done inward so the dress would cut off right on the edge so I looks completely like a ball gown dress without the train. I don’t know the name but I have seeing is an option.

I agree! I dislike the look of bustles unless they are the ones where you literally can't tell that the dress had a train. I went with a tea length dress just to avoid the whole bustle thing entirely

I had a hard time with getting a bustle, I ended up doing it because I need it to come up and not to carry it all day! I say go have her do what you like, check options and decide for yourself! You are paying them!

The options are pretty much bustle the dress, cut off the train, or drag your dress around all night. I’m not a fan of a bustle, but since I need it and I don’t have a good view of it anyway, I’ll learn to live with it.

I think either an American Bustle

Unpopular opinion: i think bustles are ugly 2or a Ballroom Bustle
Unpopular opinion: i think bustles are ugly 3

would work well with that dress. And I don't think either look like a clump of fabric tied to your butt lol but it may add some poof to the bottom just because of the extra fabric. Just some thoughts but I would definitely talk to your seamstress. She'll give you her opinion on what to do but in my experience with my friends weddings, they'll do whatever you tell them to (bustle wise anyway)
