Unity Candle... outside?

Sara, on February 4, 2010 at 1:53 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

I know there was a post on this at some point.. but FH wants a unity candle ... 2 problems with this... one we are getting married outside.. in the fall so it will be windy... 2 he has a mom and step mom... how do we include both? I know you can but the pillar candle in a hurricane vase but what about the candlesticks? how does that work?

My aunt had one and her wedding was out side... i think if you put it in a vase it will be ok... as for the mom and stepmom... It really depends on your fh's relationships with them. My half brother sees my mom just as much as a mom to him as his "birth mom" and he was addament that he wanted both of his "moms" involved. I dont think it looked awkward they where together and lit his candle at the same time.

We're an outdoor venue that has ceremonies w/ unity candles 3-4x/mo. I do the setup using hurricanes for both taper candles and a larger one for the pillar candle. Make sure the tapers are shorter than the hurricanes, cut the bottoms to fit in the candlesticks to ensure this, otherwise they'll blow out. They may blow out during use if it's a windy day - a good reason to consider a sand ceremony instead.

This is a good idea, I didn't think of the wind blowing out the candles. I'll need to get a tall vase because I just don't think it will look right if I cut the bottoms of my candles off, they are shaped like a man and a woman (made the mold from ken and barbie doll) I think people would be sad/scared and or confused if they got hacked off at the knees.

If you dont want to really do the unity candle thing since its going to be outside bye some roses and you and the fh give a rose to each of the moms thats what my cousin did and it turned out to be real beautiful

I don't know how the unity candle thing traditionally goes but what we are doing is just having the two of us (bride and groom) each have out own tapered candle and we are using them to light the two wicks atop the heads of the candle-dolls hugging each other. And we are having our ministers say something about burning love and our lives coming together.

If you are going to be outside, it's probably safer to just do a sand ceremony. If the wind is up, there's nothing you'll be able to do to keep those candles lit.

You only need one representative from each family to light the tapers. If you do 3 tapers, what happens with the 3rd one when you and FH go to light the unity candle?

I would also suggest a sand ceremony, that is what we did. I wanted that no matter what, but we were outside too. The sand is beautiful and more unique than just lighting a candle. Plus, you have a beautiful keepsake when you're done, of a pretty vase (or whatever you use) of colored sand.
