Unity candle and jumping the broom

Mrs., on February 21, 2013 at 8:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

We have opted to do the unity candle and jumping the broom ceremonies. This is my first wedding and I'm not sure how these things are traditonally done. We are not doing everything the traditional way. We have picked and chose what we wanted to include in our ceremony. So, since I'm not sure how these things are done, I'm having trouble planning exactly when to do each thing. Please help give ideas.

You should probably talk to your officiant so he can give you a little timeline of the ceremony... I have to meet with mine again.

The unity candle can be done before or after the exchange of rings. Typically one member from each side of the family (usually a parent) will light the smaller candles (one each) with a lighter, then you will take a small candle and your FH will take a small candle and you both light the largest candle together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzOY8BkMQk4

Jumping the broom is done at the very end of the ceremony right after you are pronounced. Just before you walk down the aisle, someone should lay the broom before you and as you turn to face your guests you will jump over the broom, then walk down the aisle.

Thanks so much Legacy B.! I've never really been to a wedding so I don't have a clue about these things.
