Ugly bridesmaid dresses

I'm sure most of you were a bridesmaid at some point. Any of you had to wear a dress you absolutely hated? A couple months ago I was a BM and the dress was the worst. I'm sure most of you were a bridesmaid at some point. Any of you had to wear a dress you absolutely hated? A couple months ago I was a BM and the dress was the worst. I honestly would have taken an 80's bridesmaid dress with puffy sleeves over this one. It wasn't even a formal dress, which is okay, but it was a very casual blue dress from a catalog that looked like a maternity dress, or a dress no woman under the age of 50 would be caught dead wearing. It was also very cheaply made and the lace started falling apart at the end of the day. It came out to about $100 after tax and shipping but I was relieved when the bride said she would pay for them. Before anyone says she probably picked them because it's all about her looking good, I'll be the first to say that's not the case. She even said she thinks it's dumb to put BMs in ugly dresses because 1) as the bride you're already standing out; 2) it's mean and degrading yo purposely make your friends look ugly; Continued below...

@JC I totally see what you mean there! You could see if any high schools take prom dress donations though. I know my former high school does. Or use it as a Halloween costume. Lol

I've been a bridesmaid once, and will be again next summer (already have the dress though). Both of the dresses have been lovely and I plan on wearing them again given the right opprotunity.

I have been in 8 weddings, not counting the times I was a flower girl and junior bridesmaid. Weddings 9 & 10 are next year. All of the dresses have been donated. I can't say that any of them have been ugly, but none of them have been awesome either. I want to start saying no to these damn weddings because being a bridesmaid is expensive. Especially now that I'm getting older (close to 30) and we are doing destination bachelorettes and the brides keep getting more expensive taste. I would kill to only pay $100 for a dress. The cheapest I've bought was $170. Most expensive was $350 not including alterations.

I was a bridesmaid twice -- when my brothers got married. One dress was mint green and other other was olive green with ivory lace on the top half. Both were a long, long time ago. I didn't hate the dresses, but I didn't wear either one a second time. I think my nieces ended up playing dress up in them.

I had to wear a mint green floral dress with cowboy boots, a leather/lace belt around my waist, and a flower hair piece. We looked ridiculous.

I've been a bridesmaid twice. For my mom's third wedding my sis and I got to pick our own dresses-- I wore my again at prom. The next time I was in a friend's wedding and she kept saying, "And you could wear this again...." well, really-- who wears floor length green skirts or gold bustiers? She tried, though.

In any event, I told my BMs-- "Wear whatever you want. If it's ugly and you never wear it again, it won't be my fault."

I had 3 dresses I'd kill to fit in when I gave them away. I gave them to a coworker who had a daughter in high school. If she didn't use them, there were plenty of girls at the HS who could use a free prom dress! I had the idea of cutting them up and making a blanket out of them. Thinking about it now, it probably would have been a good idea to make each bride's kids a blanket with them (if I'm gonna hold onto them that long anyway!)

Forgot to mention in my first post that when I saw the BM dress I had to wear I texted the pic to my friend and she thought I showed her the wrong dress. She thought it was the MOB dress. I said nope it's the BM dress. Yep...it was so matronly looking that she mistaked it for the MOB. When I met the other 2 BMs on the day of the wedding it was easy to figure out why they liked that dress. They're about 10 or so years older than me and the bride which puts them in their early 40's.

I have been in 7 weddings. For one wedding, the bride picked out the most heinous dresses imaginable! They were handmade by a local seamstress from a peach material that resembled a couch. They looked like a really horrible nightgown. I of course wore the dress with a smile, but in hindsight may have used alcohol to cope with it Smiley smile

Lol Rachel I smiled too. *wink*wink* My dress is in the back of the closet and I thought about turning it into a Halloween costume. I thought about putting a turtleneck under it and stuffing the belly and going as Michelle Duggar. That's scarier than any gory costume out there! LOL

Ooo I usually win the ugly bridesmaid dress award on here! I was in a wedding for one of my close friends who is Mormon and she had a hard time finding modest dresses so her mom made the dress. This was only 5 years ago...but check out those ruffles. We put them on like a robe and tied a bow and then a couple days before the wedding we get a text telling us to bring a white camisole to wear underneath because they're too low cut. Oh we didn't even get to see the dresses or try them on until the night before the wedding. Like not even a picture of them. The best part? They were made out of like parachute material! It was awful!

But we stood proudly next to her (even though she didn't even really like them but her mom basically planner her whole wedding because she was still a student and in IDGAF mode the whole time). We didn't complain, but man we laugh about it now. I didn't even have the courage to donate it, I threw it away. The funniest moment was when her mom said we'd have to dry clean the dresses to wear them again hahahaha! Okay...pics!

HIH if you didn't mention it was only 5 years ago I would have guessed it was at least 20. Lol

I've known someone ( my stepmother) to put the BM's in an uglier dress on purpose so they didn't outshine the bride. She always lied to them, constantly saying how much she loved the dress and how pretty it was while laughing about it later with her mom.

I know right? I'm pretty sure her mom just thought about dresses from when she got married in the 80s and made ours like that. We could have easily tucked in the ruffles but we didn't want to hurt the mom's feelings since she probably took a lot of time to sew on the ruffles.

@HIH they look I'll fitting too. But now I remember you saying you didn't get to see pics or try them on until right before. If this was a competition between you and me then I think you win! Congrats! Lmao

I've never had to wear an ugly bridesmaid dress, but the first wedding I was in, we had the dresses made by a seamstress who was a friend of the bride's family. The dress was so poorly made that the hems were literally unraveling as we walked down the aisle, and as the night went on, I kept finding new holes in it. To make matters worse, it was NOT cheap! For the money we paid for these dresses, it was a huge disappointment. Should have just bought real bridesmaid dresses!
