ughhh.. dog ate brownie!

*~WiiFeY~*, on December 3, 2010 at 9:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

I'm house/dog sitting.. Last night I made brownies and had one on the end table that I was picking on. I left it there when I went to bed, because the dogs are crated at night. Well this morning, after I let them out, I got a shower, and forgot all about the brownie. I just went to see if it was still there, and its not, its gone, along with half the paper towel that was covering it. Ughhh.. I googled it and everything said brownies aren't "real" chocolate and wont hurt dogs, and that if I didn't notice anything soon after its fine.. And it had to have happened about 2 hours ago. Its still stressing me out though.. And I don't know which dog did it, which makes it worse. They're both somewhat big dogs, one is an old english bull dog and one is a beagle/basset hound mix. Someone tell me that your dog did this and they're alive to tell about it!!! Smiley sad

If brownies are the worst thing the dog has ate, I am sure that you are fine. My mother's dog ate a whole turkey breast. Another dog of hers ate a whole tray of cookies. Just last week while I was babysitting, my dog hopped up on the ktichen counter grabbing a piece of pizza and peanut butter cookies. That is just the normal things the dog eats. They also eat rocks, cow patties, the coffee table, sticks, deer antlers, and the list goes on and on. They are designed to handle bad stuff pretty well. I'd be more worried if it was a whole bunch of real chocolate but I am sure that you are fine.

PS FH's step mom feeds her dogs chocolate cupcakes and twinkies as treats. If they can handle that, you should be good

The brownie shouldn't hurt the dog as there is a mixture of ingredients. Just keep an eye on them and be careful what you leave at dog mouth level! They are very opportunistic if something smells good!

I worked with a lady who had three dogs. One of them ate a box of assorted chocolates and is still alive several years later.

Just make sure you're up-front with the person who you're watching the house/dog for. You don't want them calling and asking why their dog has the runs, and then saying "oh yeah, he ate a brownie."

The dog will be fine. His walks may be a bit messy, and I'd take him out a few more times today than orginally planned- but he'll survive. No harm, no foul long term.

My parents dog took an entire king sized chocolate bar out of the trash. (I didn't like it, it must have been some bad chocolate.) So, I cried cried to the vet and the she said, "she might throw up, she might not, but either way she will be fine."

    and she was!

My chihuahua ate 11 bon bons! She started throwing up about 10 hrs later. I looked it up online. It wasn't enough per pound of her body weight to be a serious threat. The caffeine made her very energetic though, and she ran laps around the backyard for a while. Then she was fine.

Michelle- That's so funny that you said that.. Because out of the two dogs the beagle/basset hound is the more lazy, laid-back one, and he has been driving me INSANE today! He jumped up in my lap and then ran laps around the living room.. Has been rolling around all morning and just hyper in general.. And I thought to myself- Hmm.. I know who ate the brownie lol

I've also noticed he's gone to the door to use the bathroom way more than usual.. So I guess he's just got the runs.

Thank you all! I feel a lot better.. I didn't even want to leave at all today because I wanted to be here to watch him, but I'm sure he'll be fine.

My doggy ate a whole box of chocolate covered donuts and is still alive. It completely freaked me out for a while too but she ended up being ok. I was so surprised! I expected her to get sick one way or the other & nothing happened & she is a fairly small dog shih tzu/beagle so I expected the worst. I think your dog will do just fine. =)

Most dogs on a small dose of chocolate (there's really not much cocoa powder in one brownie) will be fine. However there are a small number of dogs that are allergic to chocolate just like people and can't tolerate any. But based on the size of dog and amount of chocolate consumed, he'll likely just act like he's on a stimulant and might get some diarrhea, make sure he access to PLENTY of fluids.

When my dod had diarrhea, our vet said to buy her pedialyte, that stuff you give babies and young kids to prevent dehydration. Probably should call up the owner and ask first, but that will help him feel better!

My vet told me that a dog has to eat about a pound of plain dark chocolate (more if it is milk chocolate) to die of it. I wouldn't worry.

A few years ago my dog climbed onto our dining room table, ripped open a gift basket and ate an entire box of chocolates. He was fine, although he pooed a lot that day.

It's the European chocolate that is really bad for dogs. It has more of the "bad stuff" that hurts dogs. The dog will probably be fine.

I think it depends on the dog- as far as reaction severity to chocolate. I had a friends dog die from eating half a chocolate bar, so yes its possible. With that said, I don't think there is much real chocolate in the brownie. Just keep an eye on the dog, he/she should be fine. Raisins are very toxic too, I can't believe that dog is still alive!!!

Sorry had to laugh...W A Y back when I first moved out on my own, (the 70's) I had a dog that climbed up on the counter to get to the top of the fridge and ate a whole plate of brownies...THOSE kind of brownies! He slept well for the next day or two but was ok. They actually have to eat quite a bit of chocolate, and brownies don't really have much. He'll be fine, but tell the owners.
