Typo on Marriage License GREAT NYC Help

Linda, on June 21, 2017 at 11:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Just wondering if any of you have experience with this. FH and I went to get our marriage license today (YAY). Unfortunately when FH got to work he was looking over the license and he said they got his Zip Code wrong. Im wondering if this matters if everything else is correct and the marriage certificate will be mailed to my Parents address which is correct. My Zip Code is 10453 and his is 10463 On the marriage license it has it as 10453 for him although everything else is correct.

Before the county clerk gave us the license, they had us look it over to make sure everything was correct. Typos happen, but that's why you should double check before leaving.

Yeah I guess it was easy to miss since our Zip Codes are just off by one number. Is it necessary to get it fixed?

I wouldn't take any chances and probably get it fixed. But maybe an officiant can weigh in on this, or I would probably call city hall and ask them.

I don't think a zip code is that big of a deal, unlike a misspelled name. But, I would contact the issuing agency to make sure.

I agree with the first comment. The clerk office in my city made us go over everything before they printed it out! When we received the certificate in the mail there was a letter in the envelope that stated if we noticed any errors to let them know within 14 days and they would fix

it free of cost after 14 days we would have to pay a $10 fee! You and your fiancee need to get this fixed asap.

Go get it fixed. Should be free within a certain amount of time. They spelled the address of our ceremony wrong on our certificate and they fixed it for free.

We had a typo on our official license (the one mailed after the wedding) and all I had to do was take it to the city clerk and they fixed it within seconds. After 2 weeks it gets more complicated and you have to pay a fee so I would recommend going sooner rather than later. Our typo was the mistake of the city clerk (they had our officiants name start with F when it was very clearly an E) but we had a pic of her license just incase they needed proof. Maybe bring a copy of his license with the correct zipcode to be on the safe side?

Yes. It matters. If you bring us a license that is incorrect, we have to use it and then you have to pursue a correction. It doesn't make you not married, but it does hold up the process of getting your REAL license back. And trust me on this one; you want every piece of information to be correct.

Go and have it fixed before you give it to your officiant. They shouldn't charge you.

But as a cautionary tale, one I tell all of my couples, do NOT leave the office without looking over EVERY line of your license. It takes two minutes and it will save you a lot of time on the other end.

Well when i switched my residency from NY to PA, it took going to willcall with my license to realize they spelled my last name wrong -___- - i have not gotten it fixed yet because i realized it a year before getting married. Take it from me, it may not seem important but it really is. Get it fixed before the wedding to save yourself a headache.

I would call, they may be able to start the process and have one ready for you to pick up next week.

I don't think the zip code is a huge deal. You can still use the license for proof of whatever you need. You can probably just call the clerks office and have it changed if you'd like.
