Types of wine for reception

Amberrose, on January 11, 2016 at 11:01 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hello Lovely Ladies,

I need some help picking wines for the big day. We get two red and two white. What ones would you select? I like Moscato but I know that is on the sweeter side for some folks.

We have about 50 adults coming that drink wine. We will have a signature cocktail and 4 types of beer also.

Thanks!

I love moscato but I don't think it would go over well with a general crowd. I suggest a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot grigio for white and a Cab and Pinot Noir for red.

I think you are safest with Pinot Grigio for white along with either Sauvignon Blanc or a Chardonnay. As for Red I agree with @Sqwiggy Pinot Noir and Cabernet

Cab and Pinot Noir are great general red choices. If you go with the moscato for one of the whites, also chose a less sweet option like Pinot Grigio or Sauv Blanc. (Personally I love Chardonnay, too, but I know more people prefer Pinot Grigios or Moscatos so I'll refrain from recommending it, haha)

We had 3 picks for our reception. We chose Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. We also had 2 or 3 beer choices and a signature drink.

Producer > grape. Taste the wines first.

    What are you serving?

I agree with M, see if you can taste them. If you enjoy the sweeter white, try Riesling. Depending on the producer, most Rieslings are not as sweet as Moscato but still in the same ballpark.

I think you need to try them but also I think some that may be safe are: Chardonnay and Moscato; Cabernet and Pinot Noir.

I asked a similar question over in my thread. What are you serving for dinner/apps? What's the time of day? Will it be inside/outside?

I also find that moscato is not only very sweet but has a peculiar taste that doesn't go well with many foods, but is better drunk before/after dinner as a dessert wine or as a standalone.

We are allowed to choose our wine. We preferred a local winery and all of their wines were in the middle. Most of them weren't super dry or super sweet. I think we decided on filet mignon and crab cakes for dinner. We also will have a vegetarian option, probably a risotto or pasta. I do not want to choose them based just on my taste. I know I prefer a sweeter wine or dry. I do not typically like pinot grigio. I know my inlaws like chardonnay.

Beach, outside wedding, evening around 6pm. Appetizers we aren't sure on yet. It will most likely be seafood and meats like chicken, lamb and beef.

You have a boatload of flavor profiles there, so you could try to do what I am doing and hit all the notes by doing a light white (sauv blanc, fume blanc, pinot grigio, chenin blanc, traminette, etc), a medium white (if you know your people love chardonnay, you could go heavier on that), a medium-bodied red (red blend or pinot noir, or cab franc if you want a light/dry red) and a heavier red (cabernet sauv or merlot on the lighter end, zinfandel, shiraz, malbec on the lower end. For heavier and drier wines, maybe tempranillo, though nothing you're having screams heavy, dry red). I am throwing in a sparkler(a brut rose) for toasts (and for people who just like to drink bubbly stuff cause it's a celebration (mostly cause I'm that kind of person Smiley smile )), too.

I wanted to add that part of my problem is that I don't really know what everyone attending likes to drink. I know that red wine is favored in the US (polls suggest 60% red wine preference to 40% white). My wedding is also going to be at a chillier time of year; yours may be warmer, and is outdoors. That suggests to me more white; however, one of the issues I was having was the fact that some people will just drink what they like no matter what they are eating, time of day, or temperature.

That being said, since you do have so many flavors, going with a variety of varietals (unless you know your guests prefer one strongly over any other) would be a safe bet.

I personally bought a big selection of both white and red. Cab, Pinot Nior, Sangria for the reds. Moscato (the fav with my friends), Pinot Grigio, Reisling. I also got a blush for the people who like something in the middle. I know there are rules about you should drink reds in the winter and whites in the spring and summer. I think the majority of people drink what they like when they like it. Not necessary based on time of year or foods they eat. Although certain foods do taste best with specific wines.

@Anastasia Wow thanks for the info. I do not have that kind of knowledge when it comes to wine. I will ask my wedding planner on our next visit end of January. I know everyone has different taste and I want to make sure I'm accommodating.
