Two dresses...(ceremony and change for reception)?

Mrs. B in 2015, on April 19, 2015 at 1:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Hey all...is anyone planning on wearing two dresses? I keep having people ask me if I plan to change into a different dress for my reception and I respond generally with "nope, I love my wedding dress and want to wear it the entire time" ; not to mention it cost too much to wear for only the ceremony and pictures Smiley smile. However, with the amount of people who have asked me, it sounds like this is a popular thing to do.

If you are having two dresses, why did you decided to do it and what does your reception dress look like?

I am changing because its a culture thing. my FH is Indian (Hinud) and I am Caribbean (Christian). Instead of having two weddings like most do we are only having one so it was important to combine both cultures and both religions.

Our ceremony therefore will be mostly Hindu so I'll be wearing a sari and him a sherwani. For the ceremony we will both be changing into a traditional western style wedding attire.

@ allysia02 - that absolutely makes sense for your situation and I didn't even consider doing this to honor two different cultures. The dresses by the way are ABSOLUTELY beautiful; you are going to be a head turner and smile maker!!!

I might change into a tea length dress after the wedding. Our venue has a pub on site and its tradition for the bride and groom to carve their name into the pub after the wedding. I just can't see wearing a gown to the after party.

I'm changing. My ceremony dress will have a full skirt, so I am changing into something with less flare. Something similar to these:

I've been to MANY weddings but I have yet to actually see someone have a separate reception dress!

I paid way too much for my dress to change out of it and into another. Plus I don't want to take any more time away from friends and family just to change dresses.

Nope not changing, I love my dress. Didn't pay an enormous amount of money for it, but enough! And I'm wearing all evening long.

I'm with you... I love my dress and paid enough and want to wear it all day/night (and then some, if I could!). No one has asked me if I had a second dress, and to be honest, I've never seen it done (although I have heard of it). I wonder if this might be a regional thing?

I've also heard of this, but never actually seen it done. When I was trying on dresses, some had a removable lace jacket that made the dress more conservative and then you could remove it to reveal a strapless sweetheart neckline, more scandalous for the reception Smiley winking I loved that idea, but didn't end up going with one of those dresses.

I have seen many second dresses for cultural/ethnic traditions, and dresses with boleros/removable sleeves, etc to conform to church rules. But with dresses cost, two seems like a money suck.

Both of my dresses are non-traditional. My ceremony dress will be navy blue and my reception dress will be traditional Nigerian attire since my FH is Nigerian-American and we will be incorporating his customs for the wedding.

When I went dress shopping at my first stop, the attendant asked me what my budget was and when I told her, she suggested I buy 2 dresses. I considered it for a few mins but ended up spending most of my budget on 1 super gorgeous one instead! I took quality over quantity! lol

My cousin did. She wore her wedding dress until her after first dance and then changed into this slinky, black number. Super gorgeous. I don't think I will though -- love my dress too much!

I went to a wedding last year the bride wore dress one for the ceremony and pictures by the time she entered to the reception she had changed. All of that money for maybe an hour of wearing it. Everyone keeps asking me if I will change as well, I haven't completely ruled it out. If I do it will be at the last hour of the reception (but I'm leaning towards no)

My mom suggested this for a second but I quickly reminded her that she's crazy. I splurged enough on the one dress. Just no.

At least I am not the only one who is wondering what is the purpose of this (besides culture), but it's good to hear all the various reasons.

I have two dresses, mainly because my formal dress has a ridiculously long, dramatic chapel train. I love it, but I've read reviews that it gets really hot during the reception. I'll surely be a dancing machine so after the first dance, cake, dinner, bouquet toss etc, I'll change into a less formal white cocktail dress. FH agreed that he wants to get out of his tux, so he'll change into a white linen suit. If I feel okay in my formal dress I'll keep it on and use the second one for our formal dinner during the honeymoon...I like the idea of having it just in case though.

I don't have any money to buy a second dress. Also I love mine so much I won't want to take it off.

It has buttons all the way up the back, so if I wanted to change, it would take way too long.
