Tux? Suit? What is too much to ask for guys to pay?

SeattleBride, on February 25, 2015 at 12:06 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

We went to the Mens Warehouse (NJ) to test the waters. We found that they do not have anything we like to rent ($160-$200). So we looked at the buy. We found an AMAZING suit for $345. Is this too much to ask for the guys to pay? We were thinking of putting $100 towards the suit as the groomsmen gift plus a bottle of nice whiskey ~$50 (so total $245 out of pocket for the guys). There will be 4 guys plus the groom (I hope Smiley smile ). We are getting married in Seattle.. so prices might be different there. I think that we might go to a tux shop when we are in Seattle and see what they have to offer. We really liked the 3 piece Egara Medium Gray Suit. We are also the last in our group of friends to get married and are having the most "formal looking wedding". if that makes a difference. Any thoughts or suggestions.

I personally think that's way too much to spend just for clothing for someone else's wedding. But ask the guys what their budget is and if they think it's too much. And don't get mad if their budget is less than $250/350.

I think that's too much. Ours of $165 plus taxes.

I think you should ask the guys what their budget is. Our tux rentals are $180. I don't think they would have paid much more than that. Definitely not 345.

Men's Warehouse is expensive for buying suits. Check department stores for suits. They have better prices in general and have great sales.

That's a lot, but I don't think it's outrageous because this would be for a suit that they would own and be able to wear again.

I think this depends a lot on the guys and their place in life. Are they employed at a decent job? Do they have a family of their own? Will they be traveling for the wedding?

We kept our suits pretty cheap because we had several coming from out of town, two are newly married, and another is expecting.

Our guys bought suits from a Menswear store in the mall (Arizona) and their suits were around $200 each and then we got $50 off each for buying 4 (wedding party discount). I would look around and see if you can find better prices.

Also check out privately owned bridal shops. I worked at one for years and we carried 5 different tux rental companies.

I think that is too much to ask for a gm to buy, but i definitely think that your FH should get it if he likes it and he can where something different than his GM

This is definitely something I'm worried about. I tried really hard to stay less than $100 for BM dresses and because there aren't as many options for the guys, I'm worried that it will be too much. I don't see how we'll be able to keep the prices the same for them, but I hope this thread will have some solutions!

We polled our guys, because the suit rental prices are absurd. We found the cheapest rental we could, I think it is about $150, and then went and found a suit we could buy for $200 a person all of the guys requested that we find something they can buy because they all wanted a suit in grey, which is what we are looking at. Their request was we keep their total out of pocket expense under $250 if they are buying, and under $160 if they are renting.

My parents are freaking out about the price. They are paying for a suit for my dad, and then both of my brothers. So they don't even want to spend $200, so we are still looking around for cheaper. There are alot of good online rental places you can look at for other suit options. I would check there if I were you, and definitely talk to your bridal party about what they can afford.

FH got blind sided when one of his groomsmen who he is a groomsmen for 2 weeks before our wedding demanded that all of the guys shell out $235 to rent a tux for his wedding.

I highly recommend checking out theblacktux.com. I make no promises about quality because we haven't received them yet, but FH was really excited about their look and price!

It's too much. I would flip if FH came home and told me that's how much he spent. For a lot of people it's easy to just say "Oh, well they can keep it and wear it again." FH already has 3 suits and only wears them for weddings (of which we are the last of our friends to be married, so that's not even an excuse to wear them anymore) and funerals.

I was originally going to have the guys buy, but my BIL told me he didn't like having to do that, because he's very picky about the suits he wears. If he's going to spend over $300 on something, he's going to pick it out to his liking.

If you still want to go that route, look at Jos A. Bank. They'll occasionally have a buy 1, get 3 free sale--this could be a way to get the prices down.

I think that's too expensive. Most tux rentals are $150-$200. I think ours are just under $200 from a local men's wear store.

I'd ask the guys if they really want to own suits. Depending on their lifestyle, they might not have a reason to own a suit and it would be wasted money.

We could have them buy suits for much less but they are poor quality.. But I get it. We will go for something less.. But the groom looks so goooooooooood in the suit... The guys all have good jobs so they can afford it.

Wait for Men's Warehouse to run a BOGO sale. They have them all the time. The suits we bought for our guys were originally 299.99 we caught them on sale for 199.99

I would ask the GM what their budgets are. I think $245 is reasonable for a suit I will own and be able to wear again, but each guy has to decide for himself. I would prefer to spend $50 more than a rental, which is basically money thrown away, and get a suit, but that's me. I would also ask/ wait for a discount and check out Jos A. Banks.

If it's not in their budgets, can you ask them to wear any gray or light suit that they have and buy this suit for your FH?

That sounds like a lot to me. Definitely ask the guys what they're comfortable spending. We got FH's suit on sale at Macy's. $500 on sale for $200. Wait for the next holiday and everyone will have sales.

Sorry, it sounds like too much to me also. FH and his groomsmen are renting 3-piece Calvin Klein tuxes for $150 (including shoes!).
