Tulle Trouble

Dana, on January 3, 2020 at 11:55 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 5
Hey everyone, I am buying the last bit of decorations for my wedding on February 15th and I had a question about tulle. I wanted to use it on my head table with it draped across, pictures included. But I wasn't sure what width. Any suggestions?Tulle Trouble 1

I'd guess the fabric in your photos isn't tulle, but something else. Tulle is so thin, that it takes a LOT of fabric to give you a dark color like that. I found out the hard way when I attempted to use tulle to swag the tables (just like your photos) for my parents' 50th anniversary party.... It didn't look at all like I expected (your photos) and I had 50 yards of 60 or 72" wide tulle, and it still pretty much disappeared against the tablecloths. You might consider fabric with a heavier weight to it, like gauze or muslin (and you might have to dye it to get it in a specific color), if you want the color to be that deep/intense. You'll want fabric that is probably at least 60" wide. For a rough estimate on the length, I'd probably double the length of the tables (that will give you length for the swags) and then add 2X the height of the table for the drop to floor on either end. Try using some ribbon or even string to figure out the length of fabric needed for each bow, then multiply that by the number of bows. So all together, you'll need: length of the table(s) + 2X the height of the tables + (#of bows)(length of fabric needed for each bow) = total #of inches in length. Divide that by 36" to get your total yardage, and I'd round up because you'll likely need more than you think. Someone experienced in the fabric dept of Hobby Lobby, JoAnne's, etc., should be able to help you identify options if you show them your inspiration pictures. Good luck!

Hey there, Dana! This is a nice detail for your table!
I too suggest you visit a store such as Michaels, JoAnne's etc, to speak with at attendant and check out fabric to ensure you get the correct type and sizes. It would be hard to order something like this online without seeing it in person.
Is there a store like this local to you?

I may be mistaken but I do not believe tulle is going to give you the colorful, flowy effect that you are wanting or at least what the photos show in the middle parts. I would definitely be looking at fabric vs tulle, similar to a satin or silk for that soft flow. Any fabric store like JoAnne's should be able to tell you how much fabric you will need just by giving them the width of the tables that will be used (5 ft, 6 ft etc). You can most likely find a fabric that will match the color tulle for the bows or they can suggest a more sheer fabric alternative. Good luck!
