Trying on Dresses at David's Bridal this Saturday

caiters91, on May 1, 2013 at 10:42 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hey everyone,

I'm going to *hopefully* get my wedding dress this week. I know I'm 13 months away from my wedding date, but we have a tight budget and I've had my eye on a few dresses for about 6 months now. Does anyone have any tips on trying on dresses at DB? I know that people have mixed feelings about the store and that it is usually super crowded on Saturdays so I'm prepared for that. Any suggestions on undergarments? I'm very petite (5'0" and 104 lbs), small chested, defined west, and hip-y. Thanks in advance ladies!

I would wear spanx (despite your skinniness) so you are not all naked in front of everyone and if the fitting room has curtains instead of doors noone will see what you don't want to show. Bring a nude strapless bra if you have it. If you don't have any of these things don't worry just wear decent underthings that are white.

Do your hair and make-up and SMILE when you take pictures of each dress.

Try on EVERYTHING, even stuff you think you will hate. It's fun and if you truly do hate it, you can take it right off, BUT you might fall in love with a dress you never imagined.

I've never had anything but positive experiences at DB. Have reasonable expectations, treat your consultant humanely, and you should be okay.

I'm trying on dresses this Saturday as well! YAY!! I recommend trying on at least one dress of each style and don't judge by what it looks like on the hangar!

I had a good experience the day I went to try on lots of dresses, I went on a Saturday and it was busy but I had an appointment and my lady was awesome and didn't rush me at all (she also had a second bride at most times so be prepared for the occasionally absent consultant, I liked not being constantly hounded about the dresses).

As for having your eye on some dresses, be prepared that not all may be available still. There was a dress I loved online but the stores would no longer order them in and the samples were random sizes so I couldn't even try it on...

I am shaped nothing like you soooo haha...I wore a strapless bra so straps didn't show but I doubt that will be the bra I wear for my wedding...I really need to figure that out...

I hope you get a great consultant and have a wonderful time! DB is great for those on a budget. The dress I bought is nothing like what I expected, but I love it, so be prepared for that possibly, haha! Best of luck! Post pics if you find the one!

They should give you a slip and bra, but I would come prepared just in case they don't have one out in your size since it will be busy on Saturday.

Go with ideas of what you like, but since you have so much time, try on some different styles, as well.

I had mixed experiences at both davids and boutiques. My best experience was at a boutique, but my worst experiences were at other boutiques. Davids was definitely in the middle and its where I ended up buying my dress.

Definitely what CeCe said too, I thought my dress looked blah on a hangar but then I saw it on a mannequin and wanted to try it on. And then I fell in love even more. Smiley smile

They should give you a slip and bra, but go prepared with a nude strapless & underwear that covers what you don't want to be seen ;p

We're the same size (yay!) so I'd definitely recommend trying on a couple of their petite size gowns - regardless of whether you like them. They're made for women 5'4" and under... It was amazing to put on a dress w/heels and see what it looks like NOT dragging on the ground!

Also, like the other ladies said, your favorites may not be there, but have an open mind and be honest about what you like/don't like. I walked right past my gown on the rack, but fell in love once I put it on. They all look so different on your body, just have fun with it!

I purchased my dress from David's Bridal and couldn't be happier. I will agree with the other ladies that you shouldn't just trust how it looks on the hanger. I actually hated my dress on the website and couldn't believe it when it was the one I chose. Fit can make or break a dress!

Also, stand firm on your opinion! I had another bridal shop continuously try to put in super expensive dresses or styles that I knew wouldn't work.

David's bridal also offers layaway on your dress, which may work well for you since your wedding is still a ways away. I think it's 90 days and you pay a percentage down.

I was told my dress would take 5 months, arrived in 3 weeks!

Wear neutral colored underwear. I know that would seem obvious but I never thought about it and always was wearing the brightest pair I own.

Make sure you do have an appointment (I'm assuming you made one) as they will plan to spend time with you and be more helpful that way.

Try on lots of different styles. The dresses I liked online were nothing like the dress I fell in love with.

Have fun with it and don't pressure yourself into (or let anyone else) purchasing that day. Go home and think about it and come back and try a few on again if you need to. So many girls on here post about dress regret so take your time and make sure you are happy before you place you order. You have plenty of time so there is no time pressure!

Don't feel pressured to buy a dress on the spot. It is super easy to go back on another day, retry on any dresses, and purchase. You will feel a lot of emotions during the process, and they can sometimes lead girls to purchase a dress they don't love outside of the original shopping experience.

And also, remember that there are curtains, no doors, abs they don't cover very well so make sure you are covered with your undergarments!

David's bridal was the first place I went looking for my dress.. I had a great experience and my consultant was very nice and helpful.. I went on a Sunday and it was a little crowded.. I just wore a strapless bra and no spanx.. They didn't have a platform for me to stand on if the dress was to long but the she let me use some heels to help.. Also be open to try different styles., you never know, you might like one and take lots of pics.

I loved my experience at Davids Bridal- to be honest, you can wear any color bra/panties as most of the dresses are relatively thick! I wore a super dark brown strapless bra and you couldn't see it at all. Definitely wear full bottom underwear as the sales person is in the room with you. She helps you put on all the dresses- which for me meant her hands up my dress pulling the slip down!!! LOL The girl was young and fun which I really liked!! She was just wonderful and so much fun! I would definitely recommend David's Bridal. Also, the fitting room is realy small so you and the sales girl will get to become close!!

My only advice... wear underwear. Seriously, someone made a post about being THANKED for wearing underwear...
